Hey Guys
Kinda new to the Alfa scene, bought a nice black 147 a few months ago and love it!
But in the last few weeks it has started having a few problems which have started to get worse. Sometimes it drives fine, but when Im in stop start traffic the engine revs hard before taking off in first. Sometimes it bunny hops too. It seems to drive fine once going.
But the other day its got to the point that I thought I better stop driving it and it was doing it every time i stopped at the lights.

I took it to my local Mechanic, but when he looked at it, it decided to drive perfectly.

Could anyone give me an idea of what it could be?

Also could anyone recommend someone in Sydney who is good with Alfa's and will be able to fix the problem at a reasonable price?

Ok after doing a bit of searching I came up with the idea that maybe it needs the actuator recalibrated. What do people think?

What would this cost?

How about this thread.

QuoteAt the Dyno day I queried what they do for current models.  They were quick to advise that they had a 'fix' for selespeed  bunny hops/ kangaroo hops. This is replacing the solenoid for about $350.  To many times people are advised to replace the complete unit for $4,000. The unit does wear out and an option appears to replace the selespeed parts as necessary over time - solenoid, pump and actuator.

Selespeed gearboxs do wear out as the robotic clutch does a lot of work but this is a proven fix for bunny/kangaroo hops that one of our Alfa Specialist (and others) has in Vic.

Also with the Alfa diagnostic computer, all gearbox computers can be reset, and also upgraded so when purchasing a modern Alfa I would check that this has been done by a dealer.  I was suprises to learn that even with the V6 Q system an upgrade had been released.

Regards.

Are you still having problems?  Your problem sounds to me like malfunction of the clutch solenoid on the Selespeed Actuator.  The characteristics of this failure are that the car bunny hops on gear change, particularly noticeable on starting in 1st and that the problem gets worse as the car heats up.  This is because the solenoid manufacturing tolerances and materials used in the manufacture of the solenoid are not so good and with age and temperature the solenoid becomes sticky and does not allow for smooth operation of the clutch.  You do not have to change the whole actuator you only need change the clutch solenoid.  Let me know if you need more detail.

does anyone have a pic of this solenoid as it would be good to know where it is and in its a fix you can do at home

I don't have a pic but it is a job you can do at home.  Remove front passenger wheel and wheel arch panel to give access to the Selespeed.  The clutch solenoid is the one solenoid that is easily accessible from this approach, its horizontal with the electrical connector facing you.  Depressurise the hydraulic system either with AlfaDiag or by disconnecting the battery and letting it sit for a day or two.  The solenoid is held in place by two Torx head screws.

This might help.

A few of our sposnors, the Italian Job, Maranello & Monza should sell the solenoid.

I was looking at the actuator unit last night on the bench at one of our sponsors workshops.  I reckon it looks a bit like the starship Red Dwarf.

(this is not one of my best contributions to this forum I admit).
