A London university has  found the safest song to drive to is 'come away with me', by Norah Jones, pop songs have aln optimum tempo for concentration, mimicking a heartbeat at 60-80 beats a minute. Hip Hop and heavy metal makes drivers aggresive. Classical music makes for the most erratic drivers, [stolen from the Age's odd spot], Colin.

Interesting that quip about classical music making for aggressive driving. I did a trip to Adelaide many years ago with one of the nation's top muttering rotters (motoring writers for the uninitiated) and I woke up to find him playing conductor to a very nice piece of classic music - at 100 mph and with both hands off the steering wheel.
I know who was the aggressive one after that happened and it certainly wasn't the driver. Got my attention though.
That aside I am quite partial to Neil Diamond's Hot August Night - at mumble speed and at night.

Beatle

I guess most forms of modern music have a consistent beat, so our brains can easily follow along without necessarily needing to become immersed in the song.  But classical (and some jazz) requires you to actually listen as it doesn't generally have a beat or melody and as your brain follows the ebbs and flows of the music, it translates into your hands on the wheel, and foot on the throttle.

Dunno how safe you would be in my car car if 'come away with me' came on, I would instantly loose the will to live.

My fuel consumption does however go through the roof whenever The Cult comes on.....hmmm, I may be showing my age there.

I got pissed with Matt Sorum about 20 years ago.  He kept wanting to talk about his current band (Guns N' Roses or something), and got annoyed when all I wanted to know about was what it was like working with The Cult.  Great band!!

That's awesome, you didn't share that story when we were talking about getting pissed with celebrities a while ago.....then again, maybe you did and I was too pissed  ::)

Last Sunday on the Alfa Club Cruise to Mornington, was listening to The Cowboy Junkies Ooh Las Vegas and The Blue Oyster Cult Don't Fear The Reaper, seemed to suit the occasion, most likely not the safest though, Colin.

Who are all these people you guys keep on talking about, must be before or possibly after my time.   As for music well personally I enjoy a range of music to listen to when driving, but you kind have to agree that Thomas Dolby's all I want is "The key to her Ferrari" could be an interesting choice, given the lyrics all about the '64 250GTO !!  ;D and a little bit more

...'there was always one room in the house which was kept locked,...it was the garage, I don't want you love, I don't want your money, I just want the keys to your Ferrari !!  dont' want your bed or body, just want the keys to your Ferrari, rub it, shine it, rev it.....then I saw it, she was a bright red '64GTO, with fins and gills like some giant pirahana fish, an obscene phallic symbol, and rivers of anticipation run down my inseam as those italian horses are brought into life leaving reality behind me 60-70 mph .....my hand slipped inside the belt of my trousers as we past 80-90-as we hit the magic 100 i exploded all over the bright pink leather interior and at that moment my thoughts were of my mother... I dont need no drugs, don't need no liquor said all I want is the keys to your Ferrari, you ruby lips, your perfect figure ...huh all I want is the key to your Ferrari, etc etc

Suspect you all get the drift.  But then again on reflection perhaps not the best choice for safe driving.  I am sure there are others that could be suitable,  Fastball's Nowhere Road, but my perhaps my favourite track for some free spirited driving in the GTV was The Dandy Wharhols Bohemian like you  8)  and yes played real loud, oh yeah !!

No.  No there is not.  This line gets me every time....     "I put my pants on just like the rest of you -- one leg at a time. Except, once my pants are on, I make gold records."
