My New Alfa!

Well after five months and more than a few "basic" questions asked here, I have finally purchased my "new" and first Alfa!

I had almost given up the the chase for a suitable step nose. I was drifting towards a nice early 1750!

I had considered five prior to my one. All didn't seem to have enough of my boxes ticked, especially on the value side, as they were either very expensive or the bodies were too rough for the money being asked. I didn't want to pay too much and turn around in two years and do a bare metal respray plus associated rust repairs.

So I looked at one that was relatively local (300kms) and sounded promising. An older resto, not everything as I would have done but she has an excellent body (seams to, given my limited experience), 2L engine, LSD, and everything appears fresh. A number of little things need addressing, I suppose this gives me an excuse to tinker in the garage! The small non-original things can be slowly put back over time.

An eventful day was spent driving her home, pouring with rain, thus windows up, then it was bloody hot, then the windows would fog up, all with the delightful odour of fuel...... the joys of classic motoring!

So she is a 1967 Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, Silver with a red interior....... pics to follow!! (Once I play with Picasa, and learn how to post them!)

Congrats Sean! yes the link works. Photos give a good spread of the condition of the car. Looks very nice and clean. I was wondering who would pick this car up. Its a late-in-the-GT Veloce-run high rear arch model like mine. Whats the chassis number?

What sort of things are you needing to address with it? Cosmetically it looks great, though not a big fan of the deep dish 2L steering wheel personally. Also has an interesting looking fuse box.

I love these cars in silver. Great choice in buying a car that you can enjoy straight away!

I did spend some time looking at pics, lining up fuel fillers, trying to work out if it was a high or low arch!

Chassis number is AR299652

Things I would like to do... hmm

Change the steering wheel for something a little thicker, I have a nice Nardi wheel from my old Jag days that might suit, or just chase down an original style one. The PO thought the current wheel was from a Montreal and it does look identical to the one in the Monty on carsales!

I think she may need a little tune and carbs checked. Fairly strong fuel smell on the road. Just a little hesitation when you give the throttle a push.

Fuse box was described as a "marine" one. I haven't looked inside yet but was described as having modern blade style fuses etc.

I wouldn't mind keeping an eye out for a "original series" numbered engine. Perhaps I could prepare this for the day that the current 2L engine gets tired and I may want to return her to a 1600!

Otherwise just replace and repair things as they need it, plus drive, drive, drive.

I'm gonna take a guess and say it was built in early October 67. You can find out for sure by sending an email the the Alfa Archives. I have documented how to, here:

You are probably right about the Monty steering wheel, they do look veeery similar to the 2000 GTV though.

When you are looking out for the correct 1600 (00536) which was also common to the duetto and late 60's Supers, remember that many of these early 1600's are notorious for internal corrosion. I have opened up quite a few and only found one that had minimal corrosion. If you do build a 1600 down the track, maybe have a look at this for a bit of extra hidden power!

You would find it hard going back to a 1600 after having 2L to burl around in!

Nice find Sean! She looks quite good.

Few small things to look at changing (if you were particular about things) but nothing major.

Now comes the fun part - driving it! Congrats on the find and glad to see your patience held out!

Thanks Pancho! I do have a penchant for originality, so over time the few little things will hopefully be addressed.

The PO was kind enough to transfer the plates to me as he felt they were specific to the car.. seeing he didn't have another 67 Sprint GT that made a lot of sense. I like the plate, plus the colour is much nicer than the green on white that regular plates have.

IMO Silver looks great on any 105 be it sedan, spider or coupe.

Well done Sean, she looks great. I must say I've been checking the forum on a regular basis to see what you may have purchased. Had a feeling you would end up with a step front, you had a look in your eye when you inspecting the green one in my shed! Hope you and your family are ok after the floods.

Nice scalino - congratulations.
The 105s in all guises are great fun to drive though I have to agree with Derek, you will notice a difference going from a 2000 to a 1600. Maybe when the 2000 engine wears out you could replace it with the sweetest of them all, a 1750

Great pick up Sean, wish this one was around when I was looking, great value when you consider how much it costs to properly restore one of these. I too was taking sneaky looks at this one and wondering if I really needed two kidneys. Silver with red interior my favourite combo and the 2ltr with LSD should make it a great driver.

Not sure I'm a fan of the mini lite 15" with 185 tyres on a step nose, a set of the Alfaholics GTA 14" with 195 tyres would look the business I reckon...I reckon so much in fact I've just bought a set for mine!
