I was a spectator at the 2007 event and shot some video that now lives on You Tube. Thoroughly enjoyed admiring all the cars in the "garage" too and chatting with various teams to get some background. I very much look forward  to doing it all over again as I am sure the participants are too.

This year I was hoping to be an entrant and let some else to the video but having studied the entry prescriptions,  I find that my car is not eligible owing to all its modifications. A major disappointment.

What I have trouble understanding is that the car that won the 2007 event is now ineligible to enter. Can some explain the reasoning behind these changes please.

MD, the VRA eligibility rules have not changed substantially since 2005. Is your car the ex Andrew Wilson GTV Twin Spark. If so it was Grandfathered into the category as an existing car and can run provided it is substantially as it was when originally raced and is on the correct rubber.. please message me if you would like further details...

Love to see you there.

Enforcer, thanks for your response.
No, I am not the owner of that car. It is now in the hands of Mark Jackson who I am sure is well known to you. My intended car is the one described in this topic set on this Forum:
http://www.alfaclubvic.org.au/forum/index.php?topic=7875.45
I have just read over your rules (2008) which basically tells me that I am screwed.By the time this event is scheduled to run, it should have a TS race motor, it already has 16"x8" rims and cannot operate on less than 16's owing to brake and front end mods. It also requires 50% aspect tyres or less and not to mention that there isn't a friggin original thing on it so to speak. ;D
I just love this event and would dearly love to see a bit more flexibility considered by your committee at an appropriate time.

What I mean by this is taking a leaf out of the old Bathurst races where they had mixed classes running at the same time. In this instance, I am suggesting that two classes are created to run at the same time.1 Rule conforming 2 Rule non-conforming. The absolute non-negotiable rule is that ALL vehicles pass safety scrutineering.
I think the field would be bigger but track booking fees would be more affordable and at the end of the day a lot more guys would have a ball and performance creativity would flourish.

Notwithstanding any of the above, I want to congratulate all involved in getting these events rolling in the first place so don't take my criticism to heart. A little friendly discussion is always good for promoting the event and I am all for that.

I think I will start polishing up that long lens... ;D

MD,

The scenario you describe re the classes was tried in NSW before these rules were developed, in fact it was why these rules were developed. The reasoning is that the category of car with the most potential entrants needs to be competitive for race wins or the category will continually fail, which it continually did. The current category with the most potential Alfa competitors is Historic Group S. You don't have to have an historic car but they are the benchmark performance wise. Unfortunately it has been found in the past that relaxing eligibility rules upsets more people than it satisfies, particularly when the majority of competitors have spent big money to build cars to strict logbook requirements that do not allow major modifications.

I hope this explains the philosophy and history behind the current arrangements.

Sitting in my office staring outside at the cold wet miserable Melbourne day and wishing I was currently racing a car in QLD with my mates.  :(

That sounds way too depressing so I tell what I will do. How about I deputies for you and rock up both days and promise not to enjoy it too much.  ;D

If my car would comply I would enjoy it a lot more. So close yet so far. (we have something in common  :) )

I've watched Bill's video three times and loved it. Great car and driver combo - but that wobbly camera mount made me feel seasick!

It was a ripper weekend and although my main ride is a non-VRA compliant sports sedan, I'll be having another crack at the ECC next year if my bro let's me borrow his Sprint again. Hell we might even give grandma's old 1.5 the flick and build it a race engine.

Thanks again to the VRA crew for a wonderful weekend and welcoming us AROCA stalwarts with open arms.

Cheers,
Brent
