Have you thought about getting a low kilometer engine from a wrecker, so its old engine out, new engine in, drive car, parts for 10 year old Alfa Romeo's are not too expensive as they are worth nothing, get the right version of the twin spark, there have been 3 different versions, Colin.

Who diagnosed the failure, what are the symptoms ?

Rings and big ends are cheap. Is it the result of a half arsed repair when a timing belt failed (very common) ? If so, take it bloody back. If you can't, sort it yourself. It's quite straight forward if the crank isn't scored and you will then know condition of your engine.  If you can't do that then swap/replace the engine as Col says. If thats all too hard, scrap it and start again. (Any)car is worth less than dollar with a dodgy engine.

Thank's for reply, high oil consumption,  blue smoke  only in first 2 gears when it's warming up, 10 -70 oil,no sign of smoke after 3rd gear, seems to clear up,due for cam belt change, need's new thermostat, so running too  cold, has 230k on it other than that in good condition.

230 klms, thats a fair clip, find out what an low klm engine would cost from the wreckers, not familiar with these engines on the inside, but you will have to hone the bores if you put in new rings, a pain if the engine is still in the car, then you will have to remove the bearings through the sump, if possible, but only after checking crank for pickup and scoring, if crank is damaged, then you will most likely have to take engine out, if its your daily driver, then you might be walking a bit while you fix it, wrecker engine, you can put in new cam belt and water pump and thermostat, then when its ready to go, change it over on the weekend, Colin.

It could be worn valve guides and seals too. High oil consumption is normal but they should not smoke. A friend of mine went through this process, he did it all himself and "upgraded" the rings to the later type which reduce oil consumption. It was a success. But if you are gong to pay someone it would cost a lot.

Thank's for the replies guy's,I think I'll take it to an independent workshop and get a quote, from what research I've done the job requires a fair amount of specialist tool's thank's again!

It all depends on the depth of your pockets and expertise, i would pull the motor out and fix it up myself, because i love pulling things apart, but the quickest and most likely cheapest in the longrun would be a good secondhand motor and get an Alfa service provider to fit it, what state do you hail from bluesemi 1?, Colin.

Plenty of Alfa Service providers here in Victoria, closest to you would be Mauceri Motors in Clayton, followed by Monza Motors in Bayswater then Marranello Pursang Motors in Brunswick, all long time club supporters and lots of knowledge on Alfa Romeo's, Colin.
