Hi,
Can anyone recommend a reputable stainless steel polisher in Melbourne.
Need to get the bumpers and trims for the Gt Junior polished prior to reassembly.

Thanks

Pep

I recently took my Duetto bumpers to Brighton Chrome Bumper Bars in Bentleigh.  I haven't seen the finished product yet, but I saw some of their other work while I was there and it looked so good I now want to go back with my other trim pieces.  Someone had left an entire car lot to be done (Alfa as well), including straightening all the bent and dented trims, full service.

It's very hard to find the place.  It's in the laneway behind Brakes Plus, you just walk up to an open roller door.  There's no sign or any hint that you are welcome in.  I would recommend calling ahead to make sure someone's there.  (I know how dodgy this must sound.)

It won't be cheap, either.  Expect to pay hundreds.

Hi Pep,
Following a decent prang on the rear quarter of my GTV 1750, AA Vinney's in Dandenong did a great job in straightening and recurving the bar back to original shape and then did a nice job on polishing it as well, no real swirl marks decernable.
Address is 24-26 Short Street, Dandenong Phone 9794 7530.
Good luck

John Rosa at Maranello Pur Sang has a contact who does restoration and polishing.  He's taken all the main shiny bits from our GTV to do.  I've looked at some of his work on another car down there and it looks great.

I'll second James Groom in Heidelberg west, you have to go down the driveway between the upholsterer and the panel shop

Just to let you guys know I've left some stuff with James Groom at Heidelberg to polish up - see how we go.

How did you go Pep ?

pep105

Hey Pancho,

Thanks for the update, how did I go ?

Well I didn't  :) not yet any way, all the mouldings (doors, pillars, quarters etc) and the rain gutters
are all in a nice pile in the garage ready to go to the polisher. I removed the rubber seals from the mouldings (which featured on the late juniors and 2000 GTVs) and need to remove the felts from the front door mouldings. Also need to drill out 6 pop rivets that hold the grille bars to the grille. Wanted to get this organised before I went overseas in July, you think it would have happened........

Good news though my Juniors been given an eviction notice from my sister in laws garage where it has been residing for the last 3 years. It's next door to my garage (which is full of parts and shit I've collected over the years plus the Vespa) so got no choice but to re assemble it to fit it into mine.

I told her it was only going to be in her garage for 3 months, that was 3 years ago ! So I'm pretty grateful, she's been more than patient  :)

Anyway a bit embarrassing to post but that's the current situation or I can summarise it in 3 words I'm a slack prik  :)

Curious to see how you go

Thanks again

Cheers

Pep

Maybe buy a stainless steel polishing kit (eg http://www.caswellplating.com.au/buffing.html, etc), including buffer wheels for your bench grinder and a range of polishing pastes?

After a bit of practice, getting a professional looking finish on stainless steel pieces is not that difficult, and it can be a very satisfying DIY project.
