ITALIAN CHALLENGE RACING SERIES RETURNS TO LAKESIDE

A full grid of Queensland's fastest Italian machines will line up on Sunday, May 18 for round two of the Italian Challenge Racing Series.

Now in its second year, the Queensland-based intermarque Italian motor racing series is being run over four rounds in 2014, alternating between Queensland Raceway at Willowbank and legendary Lakeside Park. The Italian Challenge Racing Series is believed to be the first multi-manufacturer, all Italian race series ever held in Australia.

With a huge grid of 26 cars having battled it out at Queensland Raceway during round one of the series a capacity field of 20 cars is now set to launch into action at Lakeside this coming Sunday.

Having dominated during round one, Richard Shinkfield will start as favourite in his bright orange, turbo-charged Fiat X-19. Possessing amazing acceleration and sure-footed lateral grip the X-19 had a trouble free run at Queensland Raceway and Shinkfield will be looking for more of the same on the fast, flowing Lakeside circuit.

Shinkfield will, however, have his hands full with the imminent challenge from the turbo machines of Bruce Horey and Maika Ter Horst. Horey missed round one of the championship due to overseas business commitments but returns this weekend to pilot the amazing former World Touring Car Championship Maserti Ghibli. A twin-turbo rocket, the Maserati is running on full slicks (the majority of this field is shod with semi-slicks) and Horey has his sights set on cracking 57 seconds around Lakeside.

The Alfa Romeo contingent may not have the horsepower of some of the turbo machines but the marque will certainly be well represented and looking for a podium position. Proudly flying the Alfa flag will be Mark Jackson's Alfetta GTV, John Coleman's V6 Alfa 75, Brent Hampstead's Giulietta sports sedan and the seriously quick Alfasud Sprint of Peter Parianos.

The complete unknown in this field is debut driver Peter Jones in his Ferrari F430 Challenge. Having previously raced in the Production Sports category, Jones' Ferrari has proved itself to be consistently quick and it should be right up there with Horey, Shinkfield and co on Sunday.

The subsequent three rounds of the 2014 Italian Challenge Racing Series will take place on the following dates:

•   Round 3 - Queensland Raceway on the weekend of, August 23/24
•   Round 4 - Lakeside Park on the weekend of September 20/21 (this final round will also double as the Festival Of Italian Motorsport, including a regularity category, Italian car and bike display and Italian swap meet)
