Hi Guys

Just trying to sort out the gtv6 for club reg a nd get it humming along.

Last week fed it some Start Ya Bastard and had some spurts of running on the ethanol but nothing else.

this week replaced all plugs and tried the same.
I have it sort of running in a fashion in that it appears only cylinder 1 and 2 are firing.

All the rest of the exhausts are cold.

So any ideas - i just had the thought that from an engine mechanical thing one bank of a v6 not running sounds bad. does anyone know if there are electrical faults that could cause the same.

I will check my info and see but thought I would ask first.

Thanks in advance

Shane

Hi Shane, how long has it been since the engine has be run?
It's quite possible that the injectors are blocked or seized.
If the engine fires up on start u bastard then spark and ecu are probably ok, and if it's running on 2 clys then it's getting some sort of fuel pressure.
I have had all 6 injectors seized on motors that have been left sit for extended periods.

My advice would be to pull the injector rail off and either test it yourself, I can advise on how or take it to a FI shop and have the injectors tested/cleaned.

It's a good 1st step as the v6 will always run rough if the injectors are in poor condition.

thanks for the tip. Its probably been 4 -5 months since it last ran. The injectors were all new last year but i hear what you are saying.

I do have 6 spares so I could I suppose test the electronics by connecting the electric control to an old injector, obviously no fuel but i would expect it to make some sort of noise if it was trying to fire.

Thanks

Have a look at this clip

A AA battery will fire a gtv6 injector. Just be aware that the pulse from the ecu to fire a injector is very short and is best tested with a logic probe as a digital multimeter probably won't show anything.

Hi Shane.

Give the injectors a tap with a 3/8 extension or something similar mate before you go pulling them out.

Shane, just a thought.

If the car fires on methanol but wont run, it might be fuel delivery and the starting circuit.

I had this problem with both my GTV6s.  I replaced the usual suspects, Auxiliary Air Valve (AAV) which sits on the drivers side cam cover and the Thermo Time Switch which is in the thermostat housing. AAVs are a bit tricky to source, but I have found them on eBay, I think they are reasonably interchangeable with other L Jetronic equipped cars such as early BMWs.

If that doesn't work the next step is the Fuel relay that sits in the drivers side of the engine bay right in the upper corner. These fail regularly. They are not available for GTV6s but are the same for E30 and equivalent L Jetronic BMWs.

If the car hunts when cold, its generally the AAV. If it still won't run after this is replaced it might be the fuel relay. Once I replaced this my car was as good as gold.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for your help Guys - hoping to get some time on it this weekend although we are baby sitting :-)

I like the smacking the injectors with the extension - will try that, also like the Battery test - thanks.

I will update when I do more testing

Cool Jesus

I'd start from the basics spark/fuel/air and combustion (timing, compression) Are you getting spark on all cylinders? Check plugs, leads, coil. I mention coil as I'm unsure how many you have. If you have just the one then disregard. Then I'd look at fuel delivery, though I doubt this is your issue?

Moisture in dist cap?
Corroded Rotor arm?
Poor connection to air flow meter?
Fuel pump relay?

just some other suggestions...
