safe replacement of rear bump stops

Can someone please suggest a safe way of keeping the rear suspension compressed while replacing the rubber bump stops?

The one at the top that holds the rebound straps in place ?

I put the rear of the car on stands and then the the axle on stands (each end).
'66 Duetto (lacework of doom)
'73 1600 GT Junior (ensconced)
'03 156 1.9JTD Sportwagon (daily driver)
