Am on a long journey which at times has been extremely frustrating ... however moving along ... can anyone advise me on relining the roof interior ... is it a job an amateur can tackle or something only for professionals...

kartone

for starters, I believe you need to remove the windscreen !

+1 with kartone. Its folded over into the sill of the windscreen, then held there with glue and the rubber channel that sits on the lip right around the windscreen. Its do-ale, but get a windscreen guy to remove the glass.

thanks for the heads up guys ... i've had the car in the body shop having the rust done and the screen removed twice and didn't pay any attention at the time ... well it looks as though i'll have to bite the bullet and have it taken out again

Hi all
Gone ahead and removed lining ... no need to remove windscreen in alfetta gt as there is a moulding that abuts the screen and covers that area ...
however have taken it to my local trimmer who says is unable to get a similar vinyl to  the original ... anyone know a supplier? Is no one breeding vinyls like they used to?
cheers

Did the headliner have wire hoops like the GTV6? Can you wash it? I washed mine and it was much better - although it still had a lot of road muck left on it.

Cool Jesus

It's  close to the 105 headliner. I remember finding it at a 105 site (or headliner specialist) in he UK. I believe it's called a snake bite pattern for the GT? I'll see if I can find it. Good news about the front trim too.

Thanks Cool Jesus and tpalfa ... the lining is way past its use by date so hardly any use trying to wash it ... and yes it has the wire rods that fit into the roof body work ... there was a trimmer in Sydney (Rockdale/Arncliff area) who reskinned the dash and door trim who gave me a swatch ... however can't remember the name or exact address ... anyway the gt is no way ready for the road to get there ... this a side journey into distraction from the major mechanical work underway ...

My '79 GTV certainly had a different pattern material to the '76 GT.  So if concourse accuracy is important I'd say you'll nee to look internationally.

And as you discovered, the front of the liner is affixed differently in the GT (with a bonded in screen) compared to the GTV (gasketed screen).

BTW, the two screens are physically different sizes too.

Thanks Paul
Don't know about concourse ... but the sample of vinyl I have is good and stretchy which i think will be a plus when it comes to getting the lining back in

If concourse isn't an issue, consider using the opportunity to install the lining so it sits closer to the roof/soundproofing, particularly at the LH/RH edges.  This is accomplished by the bend in the retaining wires and the way the wire pockets are sewn to the headliner.   The extra few mms of headroom make a huge difference, particularly if you are over average height, and/or you have good foam (or wear a helmet).

Gotta say I like the vinyl much more than cloth liners.  The latter really grabs the hair, which is irritating  ;)

Richard, found my notes on the headlining. Here's a couple of sites with the period correct (I think) lining
