Looking to buy 105 GTV, appreciate any tips

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy either a 1750 or 2000 105 series GTV and would love some expert/experienced opinion on what to look for/watch out for, good places for spare parts, difference between the 1750 & 2000.....
Basically any thing helpfull would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard, pretty open question you have posed. I read in your other post your Dad used to race an Alfa some years ago so you have been exposed to them so to speak!

What to look out for?
Gee thats an essay in itself. Not knowing how handy you are (can you weld, paint, mechanical work?) the main thing would be to find a car with the best body you can afford. The better it is (forget about finding a 'rust free' car) the less $$$ will be absorbed into getting it right (unless you are doing it yourself). Make sure all the parts are there as some parts are hard to find/replace. Generally most body parts for 1750/2000 GTV's are available repro - so expect some fiddling to make fit.

Mechanically we are blessed with really good availability so no drama there. Engine wise the 2 (1750 & 2000) are quite different in nature. 2000 is a bit of lazy, torquey engine, 1750 likes a few more revs and many think is the pick of the 105 litter (1300, 1600, 1750, 2000) but its personal preference.

Spare parts can be had from Oz (see the home page for club sponsors) or there are a number of sites in the UK who do a roaring trade (Classic Alfa, Alfaholics, Highwood Alfa).

Have a read of this forum for resto's etc and if you want to kill a few weeks sign up and have a look at the AlfaBB forum. Its a great reference point with specialist lists for each model range.

Don't be shy to ask more questions, great lot of knowledgeable people on this site who have probably done what you are about to do before.

Thanks heaps, i've been sitting up late at night reading through heaps of posts and doing research.

I plan to come along on Sunday and have a look.

I'm no mechanic, but i can handle the basics. I also hear good reviews about Monza in Bayswater and spoke with Hugh today.

The body side of things i have no experience in and think i'll buy the best body i can find (i'd prefer mechanical issues as opposed to body issues.

The comforting thing, everyone in the club seems to be really welcoming and have a wealth of information.

Hopefully i can pick up some tips on Sunday.
