And so it begins...

I'm running Dunlop Direzza Z1 on the super (the Z2 model were released this year I think)

A friend runs the Yoko Neova AD08 which I think *just* have the edge on the Dunlops...   (and they were on special with the dealers not too long ago.. 4 for the price of 3.)

I'll go the Neovas when the Dunlops wear out - but pretty similar tyres.

I commuted 40km daily in the Super with the Z1s on all through winter  - very very good in the cold and wet despite popular wisdom suggesting they'd be terrible. My point being I leave them on the car all the time and just mess about with pressures for track days - rather than messing around changing tyres for track days...

Good luck :)

Cheers,

Scott

Plus 1 for the Yoko Neova AD08.  They are also reasonably long lived for a track / road tyre.

Thanks Chaps,

currently its fitted with 205/55 R15 which are a bit wide for the rims (and the rear arches!), plus this size isnt available in track tyres....

so maybe a 195/55 R15 which is available but a bit smaller than whats on it (627mm is std diameter i believe, 205/55 is 607mm and this tyre is 595mm...)

so a couple of votes for the yokos

how about Toyo R888? Hankook Z221? Nitto NT01?

Hey there DV,

Are you wanting road tyres or competition tyres (aka R tyres, semi slicks etc).

The current replies suggest good road tyres which I agree with as I run Z1's on a road car and are pretty good and did have a go in them on the track, with a road car.

Your last comment refers to the competition tyres.  So there is a difference, so be clear on what you are after and for what purpose.

I don't believe there is anything in between.  Some say best of both worlds, I say worst of both worlds.
If you end up with super duper road tyres ie Z1 or 2 or better and then expect to go as quick as someone on R's, it will not happen unless you are comparing to me!!!

Likewise some of the "other" brands of R's, though reports out there mention as good as main stream brands, they are not, otherwise you would be seeing them being used at open race meetings.  You will know the main brands, if not, just ask.  I haven't listed as I don't want to appear biased.

Also once on R's, you will not go back.  So please do just stick to road tyres as you will beat me if on R's.

My 2 cents.

Thanks Neil, some very good points you've raised... I hadn't previously considered beating you... :P

I have several sets of 14" tyres at home so my intention is to source a set of std 14" steel rims for daily use and throw something special on the 15" rims for club events...

If i read competition regs correctly I think that R tyres might put me into racing class (unless i undo some other mods)... something else to consider.

At this stage I'm leaning towards R tyres.. however are these something that should come after a bit more driving experience dealing with less grip? Kinda like learning to drive fast in a slow car....?

If you are going to buy a new set of tyres, you may as well get the best ( for not much more $ ) and get the R tyres. Bridgestone RE11S, Dunlop DO3 or Yokohama A050 take your pick everyone has their own opinion on these 3.

And the bonus is of course beating Neil  8)
