Borrow a puller for steering wheel

Hey guys,

Just dismantling an '83 GTV and cannot seem to get the steering wheel off. Any suggestions?

The book suggests a puller which I do not have and was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to lend me one for a few days?

George, I have a universal type steering wheel puller. Used very successfully on a non Alfa  recently.
In the northern suburbs. 0405 383 431. Barry

George, if it is like a 33, with 2 tapped holes in the steering wheel, you need a puller with a slot in it to put the 2 screws through to the steering wheel, with a tapped thread in the centre to press against the steering shaft.
There are others with legs on them to grab the steering wheel and the centre bolt to press against the steering shaft.
You can get universal style steering wheel pullers from Supercheap, that are not very good, but are ok on a backyarder style basis, for the odd job, i have seen them on special for $20 or so.
The ONLY time an older car is more difficult than a newer car, the newer cars have power steering and the steering wheels don't do much heavy work, so the splines are not supertight and can sometimes come off with a slight tap, the older cars like 33's and GTV's with their heavy steering have very tight splines, and won't come off without a puller.

I know it sounds wrong but I used some light taps with a rubber mallet on the inner steel sections not the faux timber section after 4 taps it came off quite easy
BUT ITS a HAMMER its really wrong

If it works with a rubber mallet, then thats great, but a proper puller won't put any stresses on the bushes and bearings in the steering column.
Have a look on ebay and those cheap $2 shop style tool stores, the tools may be made to a price, but will do the one off job and not cause any damage to steering columns and the like, Colin.
