Electric window woes

Hey there everybody,

I have an issue with my '84 GCL Alfetta's passenger side electric window. It has no issues with going up and down, until it reaches about 1/3 of the way down and then refuses to go any further. The motor is making a (I guess you could call it) grinding noise, which tells me (and my limited knowledge) that it wants to keep going, but somehow is getting stuck. I've noticed that the two little pulleys at the top and bottom are completing a full rotation, and the runners are perfectly clean. When I apply a bit of downwards pressure to the top of the glass, I'm able to lower another 1/3 and the issue reoccurs. At times it will get 'stuck', and I'll need to pull up slightly on the glass whilst raising it via the switch to get it going again. This makes me think it must be the internals of the electric motor, but here lies the problem, how the hell do I get it out?

I've had a bit of a fiddle, and haven't had much success, but before I go pulling and breaking things, has anyone got some advice as to the best way to tackle this? I've attached a pic of what I'm working with, but I just can't seem to get the thing to budge. Also, in the event that it's dicky, will I be able to source an electric motor from any other 116 or are they different?

Any help is appreciated!

Pull the whole assembly out and give it all a good clean, they clog up with dust and won't slide easily.
Clean the felt guides with car wash-wax, the detergent will clean out the dirt and the wax will provide lubrication for the glass.
The cables should be cleaned and lubricated with silicone spray, which won't attract dust, don't use WD40.
Take off the felt seals at the top of the glass opening, they usually just pull out, the ones that run parrallal to the roof.
There are usually 2 - 6mm screws that are at the bottom of the glass, undo these and the glass will usually pull out the top of the door opening.
Then pull out the felt guides that are at the sides of the door to guide the glass up and down.
Loosen off all the bolts that hold the assembly and motor and slip it through the inside of the door openings.
If there is anything broken or not working, you might be best to get a good secondhand unit from a wrecker, such as Monza Motors in Bayswater, Victoria, as opposed to trying to fix it, Colin.

I can tell you my 83 Alfetta GTV's electric windows are very different in design. Your door has more in common with my 89 Alfa 75. So you may have more luck getting parts if needed from a 75 to fit and they are almost certainly easier to source.

If it's raising to a certain point then sticking, usually the motor transfer area has a problem or it's getting stuck on something assuming power is not the problem, to access you need to remove door trim, remove door glass from unit via undoing the two nuts and pushing glass up then remove all nuts attaching unit to door, disconnect power lead and remove, can get tricky to remove unit from some doors, all about angles, if power to unit is good and you do not have the time to repair, best off sourcing a good one and replace.

So I've managed to get it all out, the motor seems to be perfectly fine and would spin all day if it needed to. Which would leave it up to simply being the pulley inside the main part.

I can't see a way to get it apart without a lot of force, which I'd be worried might damage the damn thing. I think for the time being I'll simply swap it out with one of the rear window units until I find a replacement.

So the motor is making a noise, thats good, see if the cable coming out of the motor is moving at all, it should move one way and then reverse the polarity on the motor, the cable should move the other way.
If you can't see the cable moving, the drive in the motor has stripped or packed up.
Have you tried to source another one?, talk to a wrecker and they might have one or know what type will fit, Colin.
