Buying an Auto Diesel 159 Wagon, what should I know before I do?

Hi, I have Alfas but not a diesel and not a 159. My friend after spending time in mine has the bug and wants to buy a 159 Diesel wagon. It's a 2010 1.9, 35,000km.

What should I look for know about, check, common problems, faults etc. when I go looking with him?

All info will be very helpful.

Don't go with him or recommend buying it, as anything that goes wrong, will be your fault.
Take it to an Alfa Romeo Service Provider who know these things well, as they work on them all the time.
Find out the service history and what and not been done, even have an Alfa Specialist connect a Alfa Scanner to see any potential faults and to ensure the correct kilometres and engine numbers.
Don't take it to a Motoring Organisation, who only know the more common cars like Toyota's and Mazda's.
Look on your Alfa Club's State Sponsors and arrange a check over.
If you buy the wrong car, it could turn into a money pit, Colin.

Yes define to spend the $300 to $400 to have the car of choice checked over by one of the club sponsor indie Alfa mechanic, especially the odo metre check: you can have the odo show less kms with the right software but it is much harder to fool the body computer.  It likely would have need the timing belt replaced by now.  $1300 to do that includes a new water pump.  Wheel alignments, front and back, are probably not done to the alfa specs for the car.  if not serviced by an alfa mechanic, most likely will have the wrong oil in it.  Blue and Me probably needs to be updated, but this can be done at home.

Oh one tip, check that the light levelling switch actually moves the headlights.

just wondering how you went? Did you find anything?
I am looking myself (2.4 JTDm wagon or sedan) and was wondering what you found out?

On German Forums they have checklists on what to look out for in general and specific models.
Haven't found something in English, as yet.

The 2.4 apparently can have issues with the dual mass flywheel and particle filters, swirl valves in the intake, EGR valves gunk up, leaking power steering and early cars that never had a cam belt service have a weak bearing in on the water pump....
