When slowing down to a stop in either city or manual mode the gears change down progressively to a stop then should change to 1st gear automatically. The dashboard shows 1st gear, but intermittently it isn't in any gear at all. When I go to accelerate and move forward the gearbox fault light flashes and there is a "beep – beep" sound repeating. The dashboard still says 1st. To overcome this issue, I use the gear stick I change to 2nd, then back to 1st to get the car going. Once I start moving the gearbox light goes away.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Lets start with the basics, had a similiar issue with my Selespeed when it was low on fluid, always kept a container of fluid in the boot to top it up, I kept topping it up for eight years before the actuator finally needed replacing. fluid is cheap, actuator is not cheap.

Only use fluids specified by Alfa Romoe,

I recently bought a 2003 156 selespeed and also have had some problems with the selespeed .it seems slow to change especially between 1st and 2nd and sometimes goes into neutral.I took it to an alfa mechanic and he spent a couple of hrs on it and said it may require a new potentiometer but would need more time to check(at $110 an hr im not sure)Another mechanic my friend knows said it is a build up of sludge in the gearbox and just needs the gearbox oil changed and new filter.
Any suggestions please

Take your car to your Alfa Romeo specialist so they can diagnose and fix the problem for you.

Did you get this resolved?

My selespeed has been doing this since I bought it.
Had the engine speed sensor replaced which reduced the occurrence a lot but it still happens now and again and has started happening more frequently.

I've recently changed the accumulator, selespeed fluid and gearbox oil.
No fault codes are ever logged

My 159 JTS has been moving from 2nd gear to 4th gear then into Neutral. Diagnostic tests run by mechanics have not detected the problem. Still dealing with this problem. Online discussions suggest it is an actuator problem. Have the problems mentioned in this thread been resolved??
