Hey all, I'm paul. I'm from Canberra.

I've always had british cars and seeing as I work in the serv dept of alfa in canberra I thouoght its about time I started an italian love affair.

I've always looked at alfas but never really took all the time to bring myself upto speed about them. I have always wanted one though and as with most of my other cars - it has to be old.

I'm currently looking at a 105 giulia. Was told its a sprint GT veloce but I'm unsure until I get a reply from the archives as I was told theres a few things that are not correct for it to be a veloce. But being that its from ray I'd be inclined to think it is. probably just had some bits put on it sometime in its life.

here are photos of the car

the stripes and crest are painted on. I would like to repaint the bonnet to get rid of the crest if it ends up with me.

its a 1600. Graham told me that its got a hot cam. Some mechanics say its too hot while some say itll just drive like a race car. dead until 3000rpm.

other than that the only real issue with it is the HG is leaking a bit of oil. But my foreman here said they are not hard to work on. A bit time consuming maybe but to actually do the job is straight forward.

I'm about to take the car on a proper drive to see how I like it (I already ticked the boxes for age, looks, pedigree lol just the drive now) then I will see how I go.

I know its a bit hard as its really the buyers market
but how much would one pay for a giulia sprint gt veloce if it is indeed that.

It's got no rust. Ray says he has reciepts that the p/o owner spent $20k doing the bodywork and chris hedges and his body repair guy said the car is in good nick.

Ray is asking $25k. probably a bit of room for negotiation but not by much I imagine.

The other ones I'm seeing are 30k up but people are telling me they pop up for 15k or less at times. (which I guess depends on the amount of work it needs) so body wise this is sorted aside from a few chips. its just choosing the cams and fixing HG. oh graham reckons the jetting is off but said if i go the standard cams I'll probably find that its fine.

was told that this has been on and off for sale for sometime. ray said he had it tucked away. He was going to turn this into his race car but he has since bought a proper full on race car so this was spared from being gutted.

he says the wheels are italian but they look like globes to me really???

any thouoghts?info? violent reactions? haha thank you. looking forward to converting either soon or at somepoint for sure

Hi Paul, sorry for the lackluster response you've received, maybe its because of your opening confession about British cars??? . You seem to have done a bit of homework, I don't feel that I can offer too much advice on this particular car (I usually buy lemons and make lemonade...!).

For bodywork, check shut lines and fit between front guards to doors and doors to rear guards. These cars are barrel shaped, with continuous compound curves above and below the hip that span across the door and front and rear guards. If this isn't spot on it really stands out. Look for blurring/loss of definition of the hip lines.. they should be of consistent sharpness all around the car.

Rust in sills, doors, radiator lower crossmember, around screens and under rear quarters and boot floor. Boot floors and rear quarters behind and in front of the wheel too.

Check rear arches above the wheels for kinks... not sure if this is as big an issue on early cars (later cars have higher rear arches which are more prone to kinking.

Check the boot floor for rust and signs of repair of rear end damage. There are a few tell tales under the car for a rear end shunt too.

Door handles can deform the door skin.

For mechanicals I usually don't get an inspection, instead prefer to bother the good folk on this forum when I get the lemon home. These cars are very straightforward mechanically and all parts are available but there are lots of them and they add up quickly. A front end rebuild (steering suspension and brakes) could easily cost $2000 in parts alone, rear end probably $500 to refresh.

I'll let others contribute about motor/gearbox/interior etc...

Let us know what you ultimately decide on!

Hi, not wanting to bust any bubbles and at the risk of making some NOTfriends. I'd be careful of this car at this price.
If the body work is done properly then it may be a decent buy if you wanted to build a fine car. A few things that stand out to me are...
The horizontal grill trims, should only be 3 for a veloce.
The air box is off a much later car. Original was a cast alloy item which was fed by a duct across the top of the engine, ( this car has the correct cam cover) to the air box which is missing...
The wood grain in the dash is far from correct but still very nice but expensive to correct.
Wheels certainly look like Globes. Surely have a branding on them somewhere.. Originals are 15x4.5 steel wheels with hub caps.
Seats incorrectly upholstered
PBR  brake booster...
Certain things also stand out that indicate early (possible veloce)
Single circuit brakes, etc...
Certainly the oil leak isnt a big job. Only a few hours for anyone who knows why they are doing.
I think for the money being asked you may find a more correct Veloce but then if everything is as good as it looks and it mainly cosmetic (expensive) things that need to be returned to original make it correct then it's your call.
See if you can get a member to check it over for you.
On the plaque on the firewall. Veloce Is typo 10537
If it is a veloce just not correct, may be worth the money, if it is a veloce you're after? Otherwise there are plenty of juniors with 2lt going for less money that will probably be nicer to drive. etc...
I'm sure this is a nice car but just a heads up that the asking price is up there for a complete veloce and this one needs quite a few dollars thrown at it to make it that.
