Hi All.

I've got a reliable and delightful spider that has recently developed a crunching sound if I'm a little quick flicking into 3rd gear. The suggestion is that the synchro is gone. A suggestion from one mechanic is to live with it because to do the synchros in 1st to 3rd would be about $3k.

Just wondering 2 things...

Does this $$ amount sound about right?
For those who've had this work done, is there a mechanic that you'd particularly vouch for?
PM if concerned about privacy.

Many thanks in advance.

Most of that must be the labor charges to remove the gearbox, replace the synchros and anything else (bearings) and refit, even then it seems very expensive.  You could buy a completely reconditioned gearbox from somewhere like ClassicAlfa for about half that... Food for thought.

The synchros themselves are readily available, $80. ~ $160./ each (Goetz)

It's not a complicated box, nor is it difficult too remove with the correct tools and readily available guides on tips and tricks on the internets...

Thanks for the information and advice; very helpful.  I will definitely need a mechanic to fix the problem.  I wouldn't trust myself not to mess it up!

You should give it a try, I had a go at mine and used it in the last 10 Hr. All is still good. It was really good learning about gear box's
