There is a new car show on SBS on Friday nights, allthough i don't know much about it, i just chanced on it, it looks to be a series, it was the first time i have seen it, so i don't know if it was the first one.
The hosts are some bloke who did a restoration of old cars on the ABC about a year ago, which was good and some lady who could be an actress or model, and they both seem like car nuts and have some good idea of cars.
In the episode i seen, they looked at the original Mustang that was styled by the worlds greatest stylist Guigaro and why the Mustang was such a success and how every model got worse.
They drove a Ferrari California Spyder and what makes it so desirable.
There was a barn find segment, where they found a Studebaker coupe from the 50's sitting in a backyard, kids, ask Grandad what was a Studebaker.
Old advertisments from the 70's featuring a sexist add for the mark 2 Ford Escort and a add for the British Leyland Metro being driven by Batman and Robin to avoid a traffic jam to arrest the penquin to stop him commiting any more crimes against mankind, [such as allowing British Leyland to make any more cars].
There was a segment on cars that have hit rock bottom, price wise and will now go up, so grab one and the car in question was a Bentley.
One of the presenters also looked at cars that are collectable that have gone under the radar, the presenter looks familiar, but i can't put a name to him, looked at the British Leyland Triumph TR7, the TR7 was made by an imploding British Leyland and was the last sports car made by Triumph and how they can be had by as little as 2,000 quid, but as the presenters pointed out, it would cost 5,000 to get the rust taken out and then you would be left with a TR7, there is a reason Triumph went broke, it was run by Leyland.
Give the Classic car show a look at if you get the chance, at least its not a reality cooking or house renovation show like on the commercial networks, Colin.

You can watch it online at http://www.sbs.com.au (look for 'on demand'). I've watched the first ten mins, looks really good.

Couple of the blokes were hosts on the early Top Gear. They then got Clarkson et al.  Says something eh?

The woman is an ex super model.  Meh.  But she likes to drive.

8 episodes in all, none will feature an Alfa.

Of course the Bertone Mustang was a derivation of the original Mustang design?:

I enjoyed the first episode and look forward to the rest. Quentin Wilson is a highly experienced Motoring writer, journalist and TV presenter who knows his stuff when it comes to classic cars.

That Bertone Mustang reminds me of a Guigaro-designed mass-model that the ordinary man could buy over here - the Mazda 1800. Bewdiful looking thing.

I would still love to get my hands on one - I recall seeing quite a few around right though til the mid 80s, but haven't seen one for years. My uncle had a Capella too which carried on some of the design cues.
Now:    2002 156 GTA

Before: 1999 156 V6 Q-auto

Quentin Wilson also did a show thats on youtube called 'The Cars are the Stars', and they look at all a single model car and look at its history and why it was made and how it went, didn't see the show on the television in Australia, not to say it wasn't on, may have just missed it, worth a look at, Colin.

I agree, the Mazda 1500/1800 is a very nice looking car.  There is plenty of conjecture that the design was originally intended to be an Alfa, that Alfa passed it up and it was subsequently sold to Mazda.  I don't know how true that is, but it says so in the interwebs, so it must be right.....

There are a lot of similarities between the Bertone Mustang and the coupe version of the 1500/1800, the R130, and the Isuzu 117 coupe;  to my eyes anyway.  All of which were designed by Giugiaro.

And, I thought the show was excellent actually. Kept me entertained for 45 mins anyway.

I agree.  In the early 80's when I saw Mazda 1500 coupe for the first time I was impressed.  It was at a panel shop.  The panel beater actually asked me if I would like to buy it! Now I can see how much of an Alfa look there is to it.
