1998 GTV V6 Airbag Cannister Replacement

Hi All,
My GTV has a sticker in the drivers door jam showing a well overdue date for replacement of the gas canister to activate the airbags. The dash light for the airbags does not light up when started so I assume the airbags are U/S. A couple of questions,
1. Would this be the cause of the light not lighting up.
2. How difficult is the job of replacing the canister.
3. I live in Wodonga three hours away from club sponsors, can a non specialist workshop be trusted?
4. Is the canister likely to cause the airbags to not function?
Any advice on this matter would be gratefully appreciated.
