Can anyone advise which is the preferable booster for my series one 105. I am tempted by the smaller VH44 but I've driven a car with a VH44 and the pedal seems wooden and unresponsive compared to what i remember on my VH40 equipped vehicle (the booster has spat the dummy and must be replaced). But the VH40 is bigger and doesn't fit in the engine bay as well.

When you say series one, do you mean Series 1 1750 GTV? These generally had a single larger Lockheed booster, so if you wanted to use a PBR, then the VH 40 would be best.

To my knowledge, only Series 1 1750s and 2000 Berlinas had Lockheeds.

I am having a stab in the dark and going to say the VH 44 equipped car had something wrong with it for the brakes to be wooden. A lot of people disconnect the booster/s when they fail.

However: In my experience/opinion... Stay with the genuine type of Alfa stuff. All the correct boosters are still available new at not astronomical prices from vendors like Classic Alfa. I have even used the repro Bonaldi boosters on a car very successfully.

Thanks Luke. I consulted alfaholics and they said the Lockheed booster, which they sell,  required a different brake line set-up. It appears that some 105 GTVs like mine came with a PBR. From engine bay photos on google it looks like a bigger booster than the VH44 was the go but the pictures are not good enough to distinguish whether they are Lockheeds or PBRs.
