For a bit of fun I've been keeping my fuel receipts to take track of my 159's 2.4l Diesel fuel efficiency. So, now after two years, and 35,000k of driving here are my 'real life' fuel efficiency figures:

Overall Average: 11.6 km/l ; 32.8 miles/gal ; 8.6 l/100km

City Driving (approx): 9.8 km/l ; 28.8 miles/gal 9.8 l/100km

Highway driving (approx): 13.5km/l ; 38.1 miles/gal ; 7.4 l/100km

(Note: 2010 model car - Odo from 43k to 78k)

So compared to the 'book' quoted figures of: Combined 7l/100k ; Extra Urban 5.6l/100k ; Urban 9.4l/100k, my car in real life isn't doing as well as stated (but then I expected as much).

...in 350006km of driving I have used a total of 3007.8l of diesel.
over that time the average cost of diesel has been $1.45/l (diesel is now about $1.30 a litre; but last year the cost was around the $1.55 a litre mark) so therefore I'm averaging about $124 per 1000k's (quite a bit more than the 'book' figure of $84 per 1000k's).

I've graphed my readings on the attachment - fuel consumption versus average speed .. The main thing I think this illustrates is that the trick to obtaining better fuel efficiency is clearly to drive faster  ;D

PS: The other thing the graph shows is that in my daily drive to and from work I'm averaging about 40km/h (eastern suburbs Melbourne) ..blimey the car can sit on 200 easily .. we need an autobarn

That's about the same as we get out of ours. We are doing a big road trip from Adelaide to Brisbane at Christmas time, so I will log the brim to brim mileage and report back.

Choice did a comparison of real life versus official fuel consumption(even included a Giullitta). On average real life are 15% worse.

I've been doing a similar thing but consistently get only 11.5L/100km around ole Melbourne town and have had a remap and DPF delete.
I'd love to know how you get 8.5L/100km!

phri

I know not the same but my 159 1.9 diesel auto is doing much better:
6.8 l/100 km commuting (geelong-melbourne)
7.3 l/100 km when my 19 year old drives it around town
Even very spiritted driving doesn't get it above an average of 8.0 l/100km

Blueblood ... I'd better explain that my graph is in Kilometres/litre ..  not the inverse x 100. (I don't understand why when we changed from miles/gallon that everyone had to complicate things by going to  litres/100k's)
