GTV interior rear view mirror

Folks, any tips on reattaching the interior rear view mirror of an '81 GTV?

Just fell off the other day. Very bloody annoying. Most of the DIY mirror reattachment kits seem to be for more modern mirrors that come with a separate metal plate that you glue on first, and then slide the mirror/stem back on once it is set an hour or so later. My GTV mirror just has a combined metal base and stem. Is there a simple way to separate the mirror from the stem and then reattach in situ so I can glue it back on without it having to support whole mirror weight until it has fully cured?

Or is there some other trick that I don't know about? I can see there are two screws in the mirror housing either side of where the stem/ball joint are, but if I can pull it apart and glue just the stem/mount back on, I fear it will be impossible to reattach the mirror once the stem has been glued on.

Have had a play with the mirror, and have found that at least the front surround just un-clips and allows the heavy glass mirror to be removed from the shell.

So hopefully, that will make the shell and mounting light enough to stay held in place til the glue cures properly, and I can refit the glass. However it does take a bit of manhandling to refit the glass and cover so I am still worried that I will knock it all back off again during refit.

So still looking for tips or tricks if anyone has any.

Your on the right track.
Did mine ages ago with the glue from the hardware for reattaching mirrors.
Yes take the glass out and let it set, I supported it with a bit of wood cut to length down to the centre console.
Once it has set you don't need to worry about knocking it off, it will stay there for another 30 years, just make sure you get it lined up right the first time.
Its reasonably easy to put it all back together.

Cheers Fetta, I will knock up a wood support too - good tip.

Should be easy to line up - there is a very clear square section of glass now visible!

I had the same problem a couple of years ago and debated the same sort of strategies. Then I went past a windscreen repair workshop which is local to me and they fixed it in 30secs using glue and didn't even charge me. They held the whole mirror in position for a few seconds and told me not to adjust my mirror for the rest of the day. Problem solved. Not sure if this helps

Cheers for that, hadn't even thought of asking a professional.

So far so good, used an adjustable window cleaning pole as a support, and after two hours was able clip the glass back in to the reattached shell.

Unfortunately, I didn't properly clip the day/night tab in properly, so it's wiggling about loose, but will leave it all overnight to set properly before I manhandle it again.
