Hi All,

I'm planning a road tour of Tasmania and am interested in peoples advice/experiences. We will be ferrying over either our 75TS or Skoda TDI and have 9 nights on the Island.

What are some must see/must drive attractions?

Should we go clockwise or anti-clockwise? So far we're planning to go anticlockwise via Strahan then to Hobart and up the east coast.

What are the roads like? The Skoda would be more comfortable if the roads are marginal, and its got a fair bit more grunt and range. My preference is the 75 of course!

this is the route we've plotted out thus far:

Allowing 9 nights for a single lap of Tassie is sensible.  My suggested stopover points would be Stanley, Strahan (2), Hobart (2), Coles Bay, St. Helens, Launceston (2).  That will give plenty of time to do the loop and add in a number of side trips.

Plenty of info on what to see and do on the various tourism web sites.  If driving pleasure is one of your objectives, bring the TS and check the Targa Tasmania web site for the roads used in the various competitive stages.  There are some beauties if you take the back roads between Devonport and Stanley, down the west coast and between St. Helens and Launceston. You will be on generally good quality sealed roads all the way.

From Strahan both a boat trip on Macquarie Harbour and the train trip (rack and cog) to Queenstown are excellent.

From Coles Bay you could try a hike to Wineglass Bay.

You will be on generally good quality sealed roads all the way.

When are you planning to travel?

Cheers Dave

Thanks David! It will be an autumn/early winter trip I think however the earlier we can go the better!

Check accom availability on west coast, particularly Strachan, if you are planning to wing it accom wise- otherwise you too might have an 'interesting' night in the roach motel in Zeehan. Not all bad- it was the honeymoon suite!
