Hi Guys,
I got to the bottom of it but haven't been on the forum for a while. Baz was pretty close in principal, the issue was 2 coils on the right bank(1 & 2) not firing causing the fuel to burn in the cat after exiting the cylinder causing it to glow red/burn RED HOT!!.
All better now!.
Cheers
Andrew

What form of diagnostics/reader did you use?  I would have thought misfiring/non firing coils would have shown up instantly?  ???

Me to but not even the check engine light turned on. I am using Alfaobd and have found it to be very useful, on the 156 it will give codes for missfire and the cylinder number. I am amazed the 166 ecu didn't give me anything!.it can't be as clever as I thought, it was built May 02. Just goes to show you can't assume anything!.
