Hi there,
Just joined the forum, my name is Jon!

I am looking to by a GTV6 asap - looked at a few rough ones already, the first decent one I have looked at is in good shape, resprayed recently, nice interior, but has the infamous second gear crunch when you try and change a from 1st to 2nd a little faster than normal. How much roughly would this cost in Melbourne to replace this synchro to get it shifting smootly? I have no idea if I am looking at thousands or less, so advice would be greatly appreciated! Also if anybody has a good condition GTV6 suitable for daily use, please let me know, looking to pay up to $12K for the right car. Many thanks!

Hi Jon, every alfa I've ever owned has had the infamous 2nd gear crunch and if that's your only worry then I'd learn to live with it and just change a little slower. The cost to remove and rebuild will be at least a couple of thousand and you should probably wait until you have a few other things to do as well, i.e.clutch,bearings etc. Good luck mate and welcome to our little forum

You could also do this yourself - but on a standard car, doing it on your back on a garage floor could take a couple of weeks ends. Its not difficult - but a lot of mucking about. Parts - about $60.00. Basically you remove the gearbox - open it up, take out the 2nd gear, remove the old syncro ring, install the new one - then put it all back together just as you found it!

And once you get it fixed, if you don't get used to pausing when shifting up to 2nd, and double-declutching on the way down, it'll go again in no time anyway.  These cars are no good for the traffic light drag.

C'mon, if you go to a guy who is clued up about fetta boxes he will pull the gearbox out of the transaxle in the car and get it done in no time.. it shouldnt cost more than a grand, probably less if you re-use fifth and do 1st and 3rd with cheaper new sleeves while you there...
