Another selespeed down..

Hello,

I bought a 147 2.0 ts selespeed last week and on my way home the Speedo, tacho and coolant temp stopped working, engine and selespeed errors showed up on the Dash and it started beeping. Trew me in limp mode, so only R,N,1,2. The fuel gage and mileage display do work, however the mileage is flashing.

I do have MES and a VAG KKL cable, so I scanned the engine and selespeed ECU and found a number of errors. I tried to clear all, but p1763 wouldnt go away.

I checked my hydraulic pressure, and it kept dropping from 55 to 45 over like 10-20 seconds, then engaging the pump to shoot right back up to 55 again in no time. Ordered a new accumulator right away, should be here in a few days.

Today I fitted a brand new 74ah battery, and a new oem Brake light switch, and Cleared errors again.

Car started right up, no engine or selespeed errors, Just 1 Brake light message (1 bulb is out I believe). I drove her for half a mile, then when i pressed the brakes, the errors and beeping came back, no Speedo tacho  etc. Same errors as before.

Any pointers? I'm not sure where to go from here. It seems to me something is wrong with the communication between the engine and abs ECU? Or could it be a/multiple faulty sensors or wires to the sensors?

Thanks in advance for any input.

What about trying for dialogue with each module in isolation?

Gut feeling is an oxidised contact or bad earth but trying each of TCU, ECU, VDC, body module and dash cluster may help narrow it down.

I'll order a cable/adaptor so I can get into the ABS/VDC ECU, I can access the engine and selespeed ecu fine though.

Possible faulty connections somewhere in the Body Computer/Fuse Box assembly most likely. It is the only common point where faults in the Inst Cluster/Engine/Brakes/Selespeed may originate from.

Alright, I have taken out the entire fuse box assembly, going to go get some decent contact cleaner and clean all plugs out. Anything else I should do/check besides the usual damaged wires ? I have also exposed the abs ecu (in the passenger footwell, right?) and will take that out to clean the contacts aswell.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Ahhh the ECU in the passenger foot well is the Selespeed Ecu. The ABS ECU is actually bolted to the front of the ABS unit.

PLEASE tell me you disconnected the battery before doing any of this?  :o

That's the Selespeed ECU down near your passenger's front feet.  The VDC control is on the bloc itself, behind the battery.

I ofcourse disconnected the new battery and put it on a charger, don't worry ;) My bad for mistaking the sele ecu for the abs ecu. Just to make sure, the body ecu is inside the fuse box assembly, right?

I found some possible clues however!

Firstly, the black relay next to the selespeed ecu was not plugged in all the way. It's not the tightest fit, so I'll probably use a small tie wrap to make sure that stays put.
Then secondly, the selespeed ecu wasn't mounted firmly against the chassis, I took the sele ecu out and found some writing on the back, would this indicate that it's been replaced? the mount only had 1 nut holding it to the dash, then 2 nuts to hold the ecu to the mount. Surely not how it's supposed to be? Definitely moves around a lot!

I tried lining up the mount to the bolts, but for some reason the bolt is flush with the material around it (dampening?)

haven't had the chance to go get contact spray yet, but I feel like I should investigate further anyways?

Can I take the abs ecu off the abs unit to inspect and clean?

Thanks lads!

No, the body computer is the grey box that is mounted to the back of the cream colored fuse box. It's not inside it.

Yeah fair enough, didn't know it came off but we're talking about the same thing :) Just went out and got some motip contact cleaner, gonna clean all the contacts and check as much of the wiring loom as I can.

also, should i cut some of the dampening material away so I can properly mount the sele ecu? Or am I missing something here?

AlfaMale147

When taking off the abs ecu multi plug to clean it with contact spray, I noticed the locking mechanism wasnt fully secured(80%). I took the plug off and cleaned the contacts, but when I tried to put it back on, but in the last part just would not lock in! Has anyone experienced this before? Surely this must have something to do with my problem?

Nothing needs cutting or trimming. I suggest carefully removing the glovebox (note, remove first lid, then light in glovebox roof and watch the airbag cable clips on the RHS while withdrawing) to see how the Sele TCU mounts. It's easy for the rough-handed to distort the bracket.

With all your connectors of the "Cinch" type familiarise yourself with the operation of the slide locking bar and then inspect sealing washers for correct seating, individual sockets for obstruction and eyeball for bent pins. Of course confirm the keying/indexing are matches.

AlfaMale147

I've already taken out the glovebox, so i could properly take out the selespeed ecu and it's mount. It really seems the bracket belongs on the chassis with a 10mm nut on the thread that I showed, however it's just mounted with 1x 10mm nut to the dash :S

Also I have inspected the abs ecu plug, no bent pins on the plug or the abs ecu, I'm really not sure what in the hell it's catching on :/

Going to check over the wiring loom, then checking and cleaning the ground points under the hood. Then I'm gonna put it all back together. If it just starts up without errors, I'm pretty darn sure the abs ecu plug is the biggest culprit here..

Thanks for the help :)

May I suggest just one thing at a time, otherwise you very well may end up with more errors than you started with.   :o
