I wonder how this meshes with the EU's ideas about owners aand repairers having reasonable access (my description, not the legal framing) to information enabling repair and maintenance of their car?

VAG group did this about 2011. They call it Odis! The aftermarket will crack the coding soon enough but in the meantime you can have all the access you like but you do have to pay for the factory scan tool 😉

Well it shouldn't affect anyone at all for a few years as everything in the car and all problems should be covered under new car warranty.

And as said by 105gta, there no doubt will be a new Diagnostic available by then that will be compatible.
