hey guys ,
I plan on looking at a couple of gtv6 cars this weekend, could any one point out the common places to look in regards to rust or corrosion, or model specific things, having never owned a gtv before i am flying blind, any help would be appreciated.
regards michael :)

Go here:- http://www.alfagtv6.com/  click on 'Technical', then go through the 'FAQ' and the 'Checklist' at the very least.  This is all USA-centric, but still relevant.

Only had mine a short while, but I would suggest...

Don't trust anyone's word on a timing-belt change, only an invoice.  Also check for drivetrain vibration. Giubos are expensive and time-consuming to replace.

Check tailgate and spare wheel-well for rust, just found heaps of rust in my wheel-well under a bad quick-fix job.  Also just behind front wheels, it's a bit of a dirt trap in there.

Rear brakes.  You'll have to jack it up and have a good look to check they're not leaking.  Not an expensive fix if you do it yourself, but a pain in the arse and time-consuming.  Ask me how I know.

Sunroof handle surrounds are impossible to get now, and they all break, but don't make it a deal breaker, I've found a guy in the US who makes aluminium replicas, I'm gonna sort out a group buy at some stage for some Aussie guys who are keen.

Good luck.

Hi Michael

Best advice, if possible buy a car with recent service/maintenance history.

If you don't have documented proof the cam belts and tensioners have been done in the last 4 years or 50K, budget to have them done (about $1200?).
Look for evidence of leaking head gaskets, especially discoloured coolant. A test can also be done to detect exhaust gases in the cooling system.
If the car has over heated badly the alloy heads can warp. The motor also looks better without the leaks!

If you buy a car without a roadworthy, take a good look at the headlights, new originals can cost $200 a piece, if you can find them!!

Second best advice, have a pre purchase inspection done by a specialist.

I bought a GTV6 Grand Prix last year and was happy to spend some money getting it sorted out. It now drives as brilliantly as it looks. Can highly recommend!!

Hope this helps. Alan
