I have a 1960 Giulietta Spider that I would like to take to Europe, probably Italy, for a holiday trip. Does anyone have any experience with shipping a car to Europe and repatriating to Oz?
Thanks
Michael

Just like to add, there is a car import procedure on what to do regarding documentation required on the above website or at the following link. Not sure if this applies for exporting, just need to confirm as nothing is evident on their webpage.

Bonno hi
Thanks, I'll take a look at the website. I have seen some who will arrange to export the car but i only want to ship it for the trip then return it here.
Cheers

Two ways to transport your car; shipping container or ro-ro. Ro-ro is cheaper but also a chance of damage or theft to vehicle as it's not secure. New cars get transported by ro-ro. There are a number of factors to consider if you do it yourself including how to get the vehicle into or out of ports (presuming you don't already have a permit to do so); cleaning costs and customs costs.

Cheapest way is to organise yourself on a ro-ro but be prepared to have to jump through some hoops.

Michael: only ship to Amsterdam or Antwerp as these ports are well organized for this type of shipment, within one hour max you will have Green Card insurance and be on your way; your car is too precious for RORO, use a shipping container to avoid damage and theft of removable parts; remove plates and replace with laminated, 1:1 scale, photocopies; full fuel tank and disconnect battery.

If a second quotation is desired, these guys know their stuff.  You may well deal with the CEO directly.

There's pros and cons to containerisation and RO-RO.

ISO containers are great for motorcycles (you can weld in channel on the floor and tie-down loops), they're secure and you fill the voids with parts and other goods.  Not cheap to just put a car in a container and it's subjected to craning and trucking into depot.  It will also probably be above deck.  They have been known to fall off too!  Just don't go for LCL meaning shared space in a container.

RO-RO is purpose designed for cars, trucks and machinery (though not good for bikes).  New cars are shipped out RO-RO.  Backloading can be cheap given Australia doesn't export cars.  If you time things right you may even load and unload the vehicle yourself.  Yes -- someone you don't know might drive your car.  They drive lots of new cars.
