Here are a few photos from Sandown today..
Too many great cars to mention, nice to see a few Alfa's amongst them..

Only spotted 4 racing on the Sat, could have been some I missed ?  - Orange 1300 Alfa GT Junior / Red 2000 105 / Blue 1750 Spider and a couple of GTV alfettas . silver one pictured and another gold one.

Not sure what model the below Alfa is at the Historic & Vintage Restoration tent was but it was STUNNING !

stupidly i only took one photo all day, however in my defence i was kept rather busy pit crewing for a mate. don't know if you saw that silver GTV before or after it's little incident Ash, but it was quite a site! Anyway, here's an incarnation of a 105 you probably havn't seen before.

That was Tony Karanfilovski's car (NSW)  with Spencer Rice as pit crew. Spoke to him on Friday it was his first time at the track. According to Natsoft Saturday's time of 1.26.8 made him the 4th fastest car in Group  S with only the De Tomasa Pantera, Shelby Cobra, and a Porsche 911 in front of him, with all the other 911's and plenty of other respectable cars behind him. What happened???

PS :Tony's car has a very interesting history, it used to be Sir John Kerr's ( eX G G )  wife's car. Genuine 57,000k's although i believe the last couple of thousand k's might have been a bit tougher that the early one's>

Sorry for the confusion, the incident i mentioned was the silver alfetta. don't know how it happened, (maybe someone else can fill us in?), but the whole front end of the gearbox had disintegrated, with various pieces of the housing and the clutch throw out bearing sitting on a bench in front of the car. needless to say it didn't run today.

As for Tony's car, (i didn't get a chance to speak to him so i could (probably am) be wrong, but i think it was a Ricciardi, made by a mate of dad's in SA, Dave Williams. Basically a 105 (and i believe he also made some from 116 gear), with a new body and nothing unnecessary, meaning it weighs about 750kg with a driver and full tank of fuel. According to dad Dave was SA sports car champion for more years than dad can count to in one of these, which would explain that 126.8.

Hey Matt,

Missed the Alfa in your picture, is that the Red 105 2ltr that you can just see the corner of in the pic? Looked great out on the circuit, unfortunately I never got close enough to check it out properly.

Watched the Silver (orange stripe) GTV line up side by side with the 911 in similar colours on Sat, it seemed to be running ok then, mind you it did get swamped of the start by a handful of 911s.

It's a great event in that you can get up close to most cars, and chat to the owners. Most were very welcoming and helpful.  It's given me the bug again to get out and work on my old bus again...  One day she'll be out on the track

Nah, Tony's car is an Alfetta GTV not the Ricciardi. 

1:26 at Sandown is very quick for a Grp S Alfetta - Hey Vin, what has he got in there - a 1:26 would equate to 200+ HP in an Alfetta wouldn't it? And probably a 1:51/2 at PI.....

ahh ok ok i get it now. If the car is running 1.26 i can see how things might go wrong with it then!

and yes Ash, well spotted, the 2L 105 is just in front of the ricciardi. The guy was having starter motor issues at the time, but i presume he got them sorted as he seemed to be in all his races.

1:26 is blindingly fast well done Tony K.  Best I have managed is 1:30    Bad luck about the transaxle.....last year when Spencer was competing his gearbox let go also and then Vin and Anthony Sharp stepped in and helped him get a new one in overnight!!

Re the photo's, the 356 is the very neat Webster car and the two Bugeye's are Group Sa cars driven by Fred Brock and Max Pegram.

The Ricciardi is owned by Bill Prowse and driven by his son (and club member) Tony in regularity who also has the red 105 that was there on the day competing in Group Sb.  In fact, I believe that Tony has probably won the AROCA Group S challenge for 2008  

Good to see both Nick Taylor and Marcus Hancock out there too!

It would be in Group S format.  But probably not overall, dunno what Marcus Gordon has done in his new sports sedan or Seby Mauceri in his rocket and also John Barbieri's 105 Sports Sedan??  There are probably others that don't have the same restrictions as Group S have.

Definitely the fastest Grp S - probably other alfa's in other categories would have gone faster.

It must have some horsepower - which is the big differentiator at Sandown - you can't get a gap that big with driver at Sandown

The Dulux & Ingis cars are both V6's highly modified with pretty good steerers on the tiller. 1.26 in Group S trim with all the baggage that carries must indicate something well north of 200hp from an Nord 2 litre engine.

A phenomenal result.

Hey guy's, give Tony K some credit. He is a bloody good steerer , and yes his engine has lotsa mumbo as he can clean me up quite easily at Wakefield

Absolutely no discredit/disrespect to Tony - he is a great steerer - it's just the "driver" gap at Sandown is so much less than at other tracks - that is the gap between a better than average steerer and a good one is less at Sandown as there just aren't the places at Sandown to make up the time - it really is a HP track - hence the comment that he must have built a really good engine with good HP.  I'm rapt as I had given up on Sandown as a Porsche/Pantera/Corvette only affair - I was thinking that PI/Wakefield/OP/PI were the tracks for us.  Good on Tony for showing it can be done. I know I'm impressed.

Tony Prowse who owns the red 105/1750 did have electrical problems.  His father Bill (Prowse), at a young 84 years of age, was driving the Ricciardi special.
Tony K's problems started with an early unidentified 'vibration' that led to the driveshaft 'issue'.
