Rear Main bearing cap thread stripped

Hi All ...

In the process of trying to resolve an oil leak it appears the thread on one of the sump bolt holes in the rear main bearing cap has stripped.

Suggestions??

I figure it will need to be filled with alloy and re-drilled and tapped.

I cant tap it out to a larger size because Id then need to drill out the bolt hole on the sump. 

What about swapping out the read main cap from another engine?   I feel there may be issues with that.

Slightly confused as the subject identifies rear main bearing cap thread stripped but your post identifies sump bolt is stripped. Anyway same method using helicoil to carry out the repair and sump needs to be  removed and care to be taken not to introduce foreign particles/shavings whilst repair is undertaken. Hey Bonno,

In the rear main bearing cap are two thread holes for two of the sump bolts.

Thats where the damage is.

Thanks for the suggestion.    Someone else suggested the helicoil.   Ill be removing the rear main cap to do the repair ...

First of all don't over tighten them next time 😉 and secondly no need to remove the bearing cap, I'm sure it's possible to do without even removing the sump although if stripping the threads didn't fix the leak it prob should be done properly with a new gasket.

Ok Dad!   

Sump will have to come off as the oversize drill to accomodate the helicoil insert would widen the hole on the sump.   The insert wouldnt fit through that hole in the sump either.

But may consider tackling it without taking the bearing cap off.   I think the cross member for the steering rack prevents a perfect alignment with the hole ... that may be an issue.
