my question is im going to rebuild my motor to a mild state an wanting to knife blade the crank im just wondering if to use the original pistons or is there anyone piston i should use if the original ones wont suit IE use some jap ones or something along those line the heads are already ported an match an really was only going to knife the crank an maybe make the cams alittle milder with a set of 40mm webers
any info on this would be greatly appreciated

Hi Oliver

Is this a street car or to be used in competition?

I use a 1500 in competition and found the original components to be extremely durable.

Pistons: Use the original pistons, they are extremely strong. Depending on your setup you may want to get valve recesses cut into the pistons.

Crankshaft: Leave crankshaft alone unless full race. Get flywheel lightened and balanced.

Baffle the original sump!!! this is a must or you will spin a bearing.

Again depending on what your trying to acheive, machine the slight bowl out of the heads to get more compression. The bigger the camshaft, more compression required. In my engine I took some material off the deck height, therefore I needed the recesses in the pistons.

Carby's: What do you currently have? I run 36's in competition with high comp and a big cam and they work very well. Unless you go very high comp and big cams, stick with the 36's so you dont loose low end torque. You may need to make slightly richer, but not much.

Good Luck

Hi Frank

i plan on have a nice road car with the thought of maybe some track work but only for fun nothing to serous
the flywheel has been balanced an lighted already an yes it has the original 36's on the motor
this is great information you have past on
ill leave the crank alone an use the original pistons ill just make the motor nice an fresh again
my mechanic had suggested to baffle the sump an now again so this will be done
again thank you for this valuable info
the car in currently in primer an just need flatting back i have removed the wheel arches as i think the natural line of the body is wonderful i have done some seam welding to the engine bay an the door
i will post some picture in the next couple of days but the guards an door are still off the car so she is a little naked
ps an was thinking of getting some different headers for her

Hi Oliver,

Check out these websites:

http://www.colombo-bariani.com/catalogo.php?lang=eng.
This has camshaft specs.

http://www.alfaboxertuning.fws1.com/
This has heaps of info on the boxer engine. Heaps of good info, take your time to go through all the sections because some is boring, but some is very interesting and works quite well.

Cheers
Frank.
