105 gearbox-identifiers/markings

Looking at buying a rebuilt 105 gearbox.

I have found one and its meant to have been rebuilt and then shelved some 20 years ago.

Needing it for a 2litre.

I'm presuming there are differences in ratios, strength and perhaps externally.
Are there any markings on the gearbox to help me determine what it is out of/suited for..??

I am by no means an authority, however I think the majority of gearboxes had the same ratios. Legs were added (or removed) by the changes to the diff ratio.

That said, I also have a box that I bought a few years back which is purportedly a "close ratio" box, that was built for racing and was originally behind an Escort (?).  I've not gotten around to opening it up yet to see how it's different from the other "standard" boxes I have.

There was good info on the US based AlfaBB board years ago, might be searchable, I don't go any more, the UI annoys me (seriously, how fickle can we be).

The gearbox input shaft is the best way to tell. The 2 L has a thicker shaft and the others have a necked down shaft same gearsets, and housing but different bearings and seals. The 2L bearings are actually worse as they are a split bearing. I'll see if I can take a photo of the 2 input shafts

So.....reputedly a 1750 Berlina box says vendor.
I know there are a lot of variables regarding quality and actuality of long ago rebuild, but to take a punt....>
What do you think i should pay for it. ?

Hard to say what to pay, prices are getting out of control,, I will say that these boxes are pretty easy to rebuild, and I think there are once again decent quality syncro rings available so unless you know exactly what's been done as far as a rebuild I probably wouldn't be paying a premium for that,,, not to mention if it's been sitting around for that long the seals are probably no good and these things are not exactly oil tight at the best of times

I happen to have a suitable gearbox if you're interested, from a 1966 super 2 L.
The synchro on second is a bit worn but the bearings seem okay if you're interested give me a p.m.

1300 gearboxes had a different 5th gear ratio of .86
All others had .79.
A Late 105 gearbox has a screw in reverse light switch and covered selector forks but seemed to crack bellhousings around the starter motor.
Current available syncros are still a worry.

just a replaced gearbox to find a noise in my 1750..but it was not the gearbox.

  anyway now i have two boxes,  The one i took out was basically perfect.   i,.e not new but has a recent rebuild history and a pile of receipts.
