This is probably for the fellow mechanics,i'll give you a run down and would like some feed back.
I have a 156 that i service regularly,The last time it came in the selespeed light was on the dash. And wouldn't shift out of 2nd gear. The pump under the lhf guard didn't appear to be working.
I advised the owner and he shipped it down to the dealer ship that replaced it 10 months ago.As its still under their warranty.

I spoke to him today and he was told that the engine ecu and abs ecu had both failed and that was the reason for this,As  he questioned the information he had been given the service manager told him that it would also fix the poor idle and poor running of the vehicle,It was purring like a kitten as it left our workshop and always has ever since i've first seen it.
After the question's had stopped he was given a quote of $6,000 to fix it.

My question is has anyone ever heard of both computer's failing and affecting the selespeed.
My opinion would be is that maybe the pump has failed again and rather than fixing it under warranty they are trying to make some quick money out an alfa lover.
The pump he had replaced 10 months ago cost him $3,000 so he will happily pay to have his beloved car fixed and returned to him in a drivable state.
But this now sounds like they are trying to have a lend of him.
Whats anyone else's thoughts?

Jekyll and Hyde

The price for the pump replacement is a bit over double what I reckon it should be, assuming that price was just for the pump and fitting, no other service items etc.

Would be the first selespeed fault I'd have heard of that was caused by an engine ecu.  Selespeed faults are almost always the pump or the actuator.  I'd suggest if it had a new pump 10 months ago, and the pump is now not running, one of two scenarios:

1.  Actuator not holding pressure as long as it should, causing pump to run more often and shortening its already limited lifespan.

2.  Actuator not telling pump to run, due to internal fault.

Either way, sounds like he is being overcharged...

I agree turbo its more than over the top.Last time was supply and fit pump only nothing else, and this issue started out of the blue.
I have suggested he goes to see a few other shops That is has spoken too (of course they are all well known around here) and i believe he is going to pick it up and drop it over to one of them.
Didn't take much to sway him to one of the many specialists from here.
