Hi folks - Sheldon (Vic division editor) was phoned today and received this email - the police are trying to track down details of a 71 four-door Alfa.  Would that be a 2-litre sedan or an early Alfetta?  In any case here's the email with details and a contact number.  I have an email address also if you'd like to use it send me a PM.

This is a genuine enquiry so if you have any knowledge of the car please help out.

---------------------------

My name is Josh CHADWICK and I am a Detective Senior Constable with the Victoria Police. I am currently conducting an investigation in relation to a cold case Attempted Murder and Armed Robbery which occurred in Victoria in 1987.

Part of the investigation requires the locating of an old Alpha Romeo vehicle. The vehicle details are as follows:

1971 Red 4 Door Alfa Romeo

Serial Number - 11573\87
Engine Number: AR00548H6213

The vehicle had previously been registered in Victoria with registration LGK 769 . The vehicle was then re-registered in NSW, however this registration is not known.

I am requesting your assistance to attempt to identify the person who purchased this vehicle in an attempt to locate this vehicle. The vehicle was apparently purchased by an Alpha Romeo enthusiast in 1992 or 1993 from a female in a North Sydney address.

Please note that the vehicle or its parts are under no threat of seizure or the alike and only a visual examination is required to be conducted of the vehicle.

Any assistance that you could provide would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards

Josh CHADWICK
Detective Senior Constable

Happy to be corrected by someone who knows better, but i believe the first Alfetta's were produced in '72, and from this early road test i have i get the impression they didn't arrive here until mid '74 ish. So i'd say it would be an earlier sedan.

Yes ditto on that Mat.  If it is a '71 Alfa 4 door sedan, than it has to be either a Giulia Super, 1300 Ti or a 1750 Berlina.  I would be reasonably sure the 2L Berlina was introduced in '72.  I didn't think we in Aus received the original Alfetta sedan until '73 or '74, though could be wrong.

Might be best if someone is going to respond to the e-mail enquiry to check directly with the police via ph to see if it is a genuine enquiry.  Dave

Well 00548 is a 1750 engine, which of course is not necessarily original. As for the 11573 chassis number that is a bit of a mystery.
The only reasonable one I could find is:
115.10 Giulia 1300 Super RHD
All the other 115s are LHD USA models

Alfettas are 116

And the number should be alot longer like 11510.230878

1750GTV

An Alfa with the chassis series 115.xx would have to be LHD, but amongst that series Fusi has no listing for a 115.73 model.
If the number was 105.73 then that would be the series designation for a 1970 or 1971 1750 Berlina with automatic transmission and, as Derek has said, the 00548 prefix fits for a 1750 engine. Also, according to Fusi, the 105.73s were only built in 1970 & 1971.

To add some more confusion, Fusi is up to his old tricks with the chassis numbers -

1970  10573.1780001 to 10573.1780004
1971  10573.1780005 to 10573.1780007

Seemingly a production run of only 7 - very rare cars indeed. Yet on checking further, the total production run was actually 252, so I guess the last chassis number should be more like 10573.1780252 .....
Also, whether they were LHD or RHD is not noted.

Whatever, they were superceded in 1972 by the 2000 automatics (105.54).
As noted, Alfettas are 116.xx with construction starting in 1972.

The thing that really puzzles me is why anyone would want to buy an automatic Alfa?

Hope this is of some assistance though I seriously doubt that Constable Chadwick will ever find it, after 20 years it will be nothing but a pile of rust.
Happy New Year,
Chris

It is a genuine police enquiry that came to a committee member by phone first, then follow up email.  Seems unlikely to turn up anything but you never know.

thanks,
Evan.

I reckon you are probably right but Fusi does list a few RHD (G.D.) and knocked down (TKD) models with a 115 prefix.

Fusi errors prob.
