Hi, I have a 33 1.7ie. When I take a left turn the right rear wheel emits a crunching noise that i can feel through the steering. Sounds like when you overwind a wind up car, just a bit bigger of course.

I've replaced the wheel bearings (both inner& outer ... play on the wheel is between minimal and none) on that wheel, but the noise is still there!  ???

The car needs an allignment, but apart from that I can't think of anything else that moves on the fixed rear axle. The wheels are original 15 inch with 195/50/R14 tyres .. pretty stock standard.

Can anyone suggest the next thing to try?

Cheers,
Ross

are you sure its not rh outer cv causing the noise it will be under load doing lh turn especially doing u turn. Have a look to see if cv boot is split.
you wouldn't feel it through steering wheel if it was in the rear.

14 inch tyres on a 15 inch rim might make a bit of noise......... ;D

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Good point sheldon over looked that typo i've never managed to squeeze 14's on to fifteen inch tried at work by mistake a few times though.

Grease ... lots of grease ... and a very long crowbar and you'll make em fit ... stiffens up the sidewalls nicely :D

Apologies for the typo. I will check the cv joints, but I swear the noise seems to be coming from the rear. Thanks heaps for the help!

Ross
