Have you tried searching alfaowner . com?  It's a british based site, so lots of 166 owners on there, they may be able to help.

The gearbox is the same as a fitted to Citroen i have the shop manual for it. Transmission is a ZF4_HP20. Typical that none of the dealers will help and they wonder why Alfa's sales are going backwards at a fast rate. Let me know your email address and i will email the .pdf manual for the transmission.
