Twin Spark into 105 Starter Motor

Hi,

I've installed a 6 bolt 2lt 105 flywheel onto a Twin Spark engine in preparation for dropping the Twin Spark into my GT1300 Junior... along with a 2lt 105 bellhousing and gearbox. I'm also converting from a cable clutch to hydraulic.

I still have a few questions someone may be able to help me with:

1. What type of starter motor should I be fitting? Will a Twin Spark starter motor work with the 2lt 105 flywheel, or do I need to go with a 2lt 105 starter motor? If the latter, will the 2lt 105 starter motor bolt up to the Twin Spark engine? Are there any other alternatives?

2. Depending on the answer to 1., can anyone suggest a local source for a new or reconditioned starter motor?

3. I've checked the manuals, but I can't see whether or not Alfas have a "sandwich plate" between the back of the block and the front of the bellhousing. Does anyone know if they do, and, if so, where I can source one to suit a 2lt bellhousing?

use TS starter motor but get 131 teeth ring gear from TS and put it onto your flywheel instead of the 2 litre ring gear (i think that is 130 teeth)
in my mind that is the best and easiest solution which i will be taking

Thanks for that... makes sense to me. Do you happen to know whether the TS starter motor has 8 or 9 teeth, and whether there is a local supplier of new/reconditioned TS starter motors?

Also, do you happen to know if is there a "sandwich plate" or spacer that needs to go between the 2lt 105 bellhousing and the back of the TS engine?

I always forget which has how many teeth 

I think that a stadard thin steel plate is what should be used. The only place i have seen a thick steel plate between engine and a gearbox is on my GTA junior.

I got one ts starter od ebay and the other came with the ts engine i will put into my road car.

I found a thick steel spacer on my 1600 w/ mech. clutch Super as well...    The 2L Nord I put in my Super has a thin plate which *doesnt* extend to the starter mount - but I have a feeling my old 1750 gtv had a thin plate which also spaced the starter.  I think the General consensus is - later hydraulic bellhousing = thin spacer

I did find a little info here: http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/gt-1965-1974/30691-question-about-plate-back-motor.html  The picture at the end shows the thin plate with the integrated starter spacer.

I'm not sure if all Twin Spark motors had the later Geared type starter fitted -   I Believe they're a great upgrade and available from Alfaholics new I think.

Castle Auto Electrics also do a nice lightweight gear reduction starter with 8 and 9 tooth options

TS starter motor has 9 teeth.

You can take the pinion off from your original SM and put onto TS SM then you can use your original flywheel, that's what some do.

Would be nice to get one of those CAE starters, light but $$$.

Thanks again... you're a fountain of knowledge, as usual. If it's not too much trouble, are you able to provide a brand/part number for the Twin Spark starter motor so that I can go looking for the correct item? The starter motor from my Twin Spark engine has gone missing.

As the general consensus seems to be that I'll need a thin spacer for a 2lt 105 bellhousing attached to a Twin Spark engine, does anyone know where I might source a thin spacer... I didn't get one with the 2lt bellhousing and gearbox when I purchased them.

I counted the number of teeth on the original Twin Spark 6 bolt flywheel, and it has 130 teeth. Just to confirm, I will therefore need a 9 tooth Twin Spark starter motor???

Does the 105 2lt 6 bolt flywheel have 130 or 131 teeth... mine has gone missing for the moment, so I can't go and count the teeth myself.

Does anyone happen to know the part number for a Twin Spark starter motor so that I can go looking for one? Failing that, even a photo would be helpful.

Ive got a 2lt 105 flywheel still connected to a 105 2lt engine, ill count the teeth and let you know
unless some one already knows this

Did you source the thin spacer ? And just out of interest what dizzy set up are you running ?

Thanks for that... I'll await (and very much appreciate) your "2lt tooth count" with interest.

I found the original spacer in the bottom of my spare parts bin, which was a pleasant surprise.

As for the dizzy, I was going to try and get one from AutoCompenti in the US, but they don't seem to want to talk to me (ie three emails, a fax and a voicemail message, and still no response). However, that prompted me to look a little closer to home, so I'm going to get a quote from Vin Sharp.
