Has anyone ever come up with a relatively simple solution for a quick rack for a GTV6?  Maybe use the power steering rack off a 75 or something without the power steering.  But I am not sure whether the ratio was any different and if so by how much.  Also don't know if anyone ever tried to graft a rack out of an Escort or something similar in place.

I am using it for rallying so being heavy around town is not an issue.

Hi Flynn,

I looked into this a few years ago for circuit racing.

The standard Alfetta rack is painfully slow at something 3.5 turns. Once that rear end sans gearbox starts to get away it is very difficult to catch with that slow rack... :o

From memory the 75 rack is about 2.75 turns, but don't quote me. Not sure it would make much of a difference really.

Back in the early 90s Nigel Bolling of Autodelta in Sydney commissioned Hollinger to custom make about four quick racks, I think about two turns lock to lock. These were mainly used for Alfa sports sedans. I did come across a quick rack that was modified, I think from a Gemini, but it had an exposed thread arrangement for the tie rod ends and I was advised not to use it on safety grounds.

Have thought about going down the "group buy" route – get interested punters to put down deposits on a limited run commission of custom racks from someone like Hollinger. Just the rack and pinion to fit the latter model racks with the 12mm tie rod threads. It would take some organising and wouldn't be cheap to buy ($1 - $2K each?) but I think there would be a market out there especially given all the Alfettas running in Group S.

Seems a bit of a shame when a Qaife one for an Escort if NZ$290.  Might have to find an Escort rack and have a look to see if it can fit.

Agree with your comments on the 75 rack, 2.75 may not be much improvement.
