brake squeals

Hi all I have just replaced pads and rotors on my 147

i put dba discs and ebc pads on it.....the front squeal to buggery.

I have just got some shims from the place i purchased them from and am about to see if it fixes the problem.

What non genuine combination have others put on that are quiet.

I paid $550 for the whole lot compare to over $1000 from the dealer.

I am now convince that I should have gone genuine the whole way.

How much have others paid for brakes and where?

Pretty common problem that even genuine parts can get. There are many tricks to make it stop but sometimes you just cant fix it. Don't feel bad. The pads have the biggest effect. I had EBC pads in my car, they squeeked for the first 10k and then went away.

two things you can do to minimise squeal:
1. thoroughly clean the calipers where the pads fit, in particularly any metal sliders/holders and pistons
2. apply copper grease on the edges of the pads where they fit into the caliper/sliders/holders and surface of the piston that pushes the pad

Quite unusual for that combination of brakes to squeal in these cars - what are the pads?  The standard EBC replacement items, or Greenstuff?

I had the black ones (Reg90), which squeaked

The shims have now gone in and the pads still squeal......and I think they have eliminated my stopping ability making my car a little unsafe.

Takes longer to stop now.

I wonder if the Brembos are any good.?

Does anyone have any suggestions.

i presume the EBC black don't require a bedding-in process.

my favoured pads are Ferodo DS2500 (fast street/light track) and Ferodo DS Performance (fast street). on a FWD car like the 147, i would suggest either DSF all-round, or DS2500 front + DSF rear. worth replacing the brake fluid every 12 months (24 months at most). some enthusiasts will also fit braided brake lines for improved pedal feel (Goodridge comply with ADR).

Interesting post.  I had the front brakes done on my 156 at 'Il Bolide Rosso'.

They were most adamant that for good operation, quietness and peace of mind only authentic Alfa parts were used, not aftermarket parts.

the parts cost about $550 and I have since told the same price as a Commodore.  He also gives a discount to club members.

Well after pulling the EbCs of for the 6th time. I have spoken to John from maranello and the advice was to use the Ferodos.

tonight I put them on and so far so good.

Very quiet. Ill give the car to my wife tomorrow..that will be the real test.

I heard that batch of EBC pad where infected with the influenza A virus subtype H1N1.Which would explain the squealing .
Seriously the Ferodos are the way to go for street/fast street.

I have found TRW Lucas pads to be fantastic for a road car.

Use the ferodos.....no problems at all!!!!!
