hi all

I'm pretty interested in getting an Alfa GTV V6: mostly ones around '98 to 2000 seem to be in my price range

thing is, it would need to be my daily driver and I do lot of miles - about 2 hours on the road Mon to Fri commuting, often in heavy traffic. And I'm in Melbourne, so in summer, that means spending time in heavy traffic with the air-con going, and it being around 40 degrees.

I also drive a lot on weekends.

I suppose I'm just concerned about the reliability and how well it will stand up to this sort of treatment.

I'd intend to get one with less than 100,000 kays on it, with a service history, of course.

I have the impression that so long as you service these things properly, and check the oil at least weekly, it should be ok. But I'd like to get some opinions.

I do love the idea of a sexy, very quick Italian sports car...with that glorious V6...

thanks for any advice...

yeah, it's pretty clear from what I read that so long as you keep on top of the maintenance with the GTV, it's a reliable thing. I probably worry too much.

other thing of course is relatively high insurance cost. But if you want an interesting drive, you pay the price of course.

You seem to have covered things generally.  I would only suggest that a pre-purchase inspection or servicing by an Alfa Specialist or Dealer.  They know the cars, what has to be done and when, what is urgent and what you can postpone (temporarily).  Bushes do wear out and as the car has a bit of passive 4 wheel steer, you want the suspension parts etc  in good condition. Correct advice can save you money.

Make sure you get the best car you can for the price.  Look at condition of replacement items like tyres etc, as you do not want to be forced to get cheaper tyres that are not appropriate to the car and compromise performance.

Good luck with your purchase and post a few pics when you are ready.

Hi there

Just to back up what the other contributors have said, as long as your example is well cared for then it shouldn't be a drama using it the way you plan to. I use mine on a daily commute and in almost 2 years it hasn't skipped a beat and hasn't cost me a penny to run over and above the usual consumables that every car uses. I also have access to a simply brilliant local Alfa specialist service workshop that does all my work (I have 2 Alfas) so that might be something to hunt out pre-purcahse too.

All in all I'd say go for it and enjoy the expereince of driving something both beautiful and unusual on a daily basis!!

Good luck
