Two more fun things.

I have encountered two little problems, one is while driving there seems to be some play in the drive line, i.e. A drive line clunk if I put the power on too quickly from being backed off. Is this some play in the drive line somewhere or what else could it be? If I put the throttle on too quickly it is quite a fair thump. By this I mean applying the throttle quickly and not feeding it in slowly (hope that makes sence).
The other problem I have come across is using the guide of the topic a few pages ago and looking closely at the Haynes workshop manual I have been having real trouble getting the front lower ball joint from the stub axle carrier. I have tried with a ball joint separator and a few other levers heaps of rust breaker etc and I have not been able to get it to budge. I know this is more a straight forward mechanical question than a Alfa specific one but its a bit beyond me.
Cheers in advance for the help guys,
Joey.

Right hand rear gearbox mount will be rooted, there's your clunk.

My haynes manual puts that as "final drive housing flexible mounting bush" am I looking at the right part? If so how hard of a job is it to replace? Also how urgently should I be getting it fixed?
Cheers for the quick reply as well.

this thing happend to me also.
the bolts off the right hand gearbox mounts came loose and feel out.

i would fix it asap as it will dammage all the other mounts etc etc. and more bolts might fall out.

If you elect to replace your transmission front mounts, be sure to replace both at the same time. To prevent future collapse of the rubber sandwich, install an 8mm bolt through it. See photo. Ideal for racing applications too.

Be aware though that some people have found this mod to cause a lot of vibration to be transmitted into the body.  Suggest installing the bolt in such a way that it can be removed as easily as possible (should be possible to get at it without undoing anything else from memory), in case you have this issue.

MD

I agree there's a potential for that to occur. To make sure that the vibration is not due to the modified mounts, do it in these stages.

Make the modification to the mounts but leave the bolts out.

Assemble the transmission in the normal manner and test everything so that it is vibration free to your satisfaction( if it is totally vibration free, it will be the first one in Australia).

Once satisfied, install the bolts and see if there is a marked difference. If you are unhappy with it, remove the bolts.

This is a worthwhile modification especially if you are the type that likes to have brisk take offs.

Hi Mick,
I did the same thing as MD but couldnt stand the vibration so I put a smaller bolt in the hole with a lock nut and not tightening up on the mount. This allows some movement without the vibration and the insurance that it cant go to far.

This is on my track car -GTV,which I punched a hole in the floor of when it was a road car with the same mount letting go.

Yea, I try my hardest to be gentle on this thing... I have great sincro's in this box so I try so hard to keep them that way. :p Yea, I am going to have to get this done soon. I am I think I will go with MD's bolt idea, if it causes a problem with vibrations I will just take it out.
Cheers guys  8)
