I cut about 8 cm out of the gearstick on my Giulietta and bent it over a bit towards the driver and back a bit so it comes right to hand.  It makes a big difference to the gearchange.

Hi Brad.
I have a gearbox in my spares car (77 gtv) which was sold to me as a reco.
The car hasn"t been driven for 9 years. I am located in Melbourne.
If you are interested be in touch and I'll give you more details.

Matt.

QuoteThat doesn't shorten the throw Pete, I wouldn't recommend to anybody to cut their shifter, unless you like chapel st and shit.

you need to do other modifications to adjust it the right way.

Shortening lever means you move your hand less distance to get from gear to gear.  We could argue semantics but you get the drift?  Also with it bent over a bit I am not always stretching to reach the lever.

I did the mod in 1986 and it no shit yet.

hi all i'm new to this forum
brad one thing to consider when doing a syncro change are the dog gears
dont use 5th gear syncro buy new parts. 100 bucks for syncro ring, 200 for syncro hub.
but the dog might be good on 5th gear  the dog gears are not that hard to seperate from the helical cut gear ,check the little teeth there like pickett fences should have a nice point not worn on one side
the dog and the hub are what do all the crunching and grinding
have had alfas for decades done 10 or more gearbox overhauls in that time

cheers sportiva

Just want to put a small input here as well for general consumption.

Agree with Sportiva.
Poor gear engagement (in the box) is a result of both worn synchros AND hub gears. Just fitting new synchros is not the answer. They should be changed as a set. If the hub gear teeth are rounded in any way, they have had their day and need replacement. The triangular teeth need to feel sharp at their points to be good.

Agree with Choderboy
Perhaps bending the lever to be more accommodating to RH driving (as it was originally positioned for LH drivers) is useful especially if you are a short arse and can't reach 1st gear. However to chage the shift for a short throw and reduced size of the gate takes a lot more than just cutting the stick and should be the subject of a specific topic set.
