Hi there,

I have been looking at purchasing a 156 twin spark. Just found a 2002 156 selespeed though well within my price range. An alfa dealership has the car. Turns out the timing belt had recently gone resulting in a full rebuild of the engine? receipts available. Would it be wise to just steer clear of the car or just base a decision following a pre-purchase inspection? any advice would be appreciated. Car has 114,000 looks in really good nic otherwise.

Thanks,
Luke.

Well you may get a warranty with the car and all should be ok.  In this instance it should have a full report on its condition as they have the Alfa Analyser & workshop.

Honestly the earlier selespeeds were problematic but have been updated several times over the years.  You have to make the decision if you want a manual or selespeed.  Its lots of fun and some people luv it.  However like a clutch plate. it wears out, and a robotic arm or actuator does cost a bit.  But hey, if you can negotiate a 3 year guarantee with the purchase price then these you go !

Please check out other threads in the Forum under 156 or 932 Series cars and get some more info.

Otherwise maybe a manual Monza or a Sport as they have extra features and should still be in your price range.

Let us know how you go.
