Hi all,

Ok so I went to go get Alfie a wheel alignment today to no avail. I got told my steering rack mounts were stuffed and need new ones, and there was no point aligning it as it would just go back.

So big bummer, with the black spur emr on this Sunday, this is not news I wanted to hear.

My question to you knowledgeable folk: Would it be dangerous to still do the drive with the steering in such condition? or is it a repair asap and don't drive it kinda thing?

really don't wanna miss out on the EMR!

cheers Christian

 It read something like this

two mounting points one on the drivers side of the rack hard mounted to the chassis crossmember
the other on the passenger side has a 5mm thick  20mm wide rubber ring which goes around the rack housing. then a U bracket goes over that and bolts to the crossmember these are the only two points that the rack is secured

your mechanic must mean that the rubber ring is buggered or missing.
If you can, get under the car and check for movement of the rack around the U bolted area, place the screwdriver between the rack and the crossmember,  also check the tie rods and tie rod ends for unwanted movement if all seems tight and there is no noise when driving then the car should be ok to drive

MY 2 CENTS
If the mounts are ok then its most likely the tie rods or ends causing the movement that cant be adjusted out, If you want more info on checking components just ask

Cheers

ok so my mechanic is a champ and fixed it for me this arvo. it was the rubber behind the u-bolt thingy, had just fallen out of place.

and just to clear it up, it was pedders that I went to in the first place.

never again

Don't take an Alfa to Pedders.

Now I know..I never take it anywhere except for my mechanic but I figured a wheel alignment should be simple enough for them. Evidently not.

Future recommendations for such activites?

Yeah, she had a fair bit of play and tracking in the steering, much much better now. Feel confident in it so yeah. Should be good!

cheers fellas
