Has anyone got some advice regarding the wiring for the standard Jaeger temp gauges?

Mine current appears to be wired in reverse??

Before starting the gauge is registering, then after starting it slowly starts to read cooler (moves left)??

Has me baffled  ???, and before tweaking thought I would ask for any expert advice?

Thanks

The Jaegers and Veglias are wired the same - the only difference is in the sender unit and internal gauge resistance.

I've attached a photo of the rear of a standard temperature gauge - the terminal marked 'E' is the earth and the terminal marked 'L' is the dash light. The one marked '12V' carries the general voltage and the one marked '+' is connected to the sender. The wiring goes through a block that can only be connected one way, though it is possible to mix up the connections on the rear of the gauge.

The second photo is the relevant part of the wiring diagram.
The wire codes are NE (nero) = black, MA (maroon) = maroon, RO (rosa) = pink and GI (giallo) = yellow.
The numbers indicate the gauge of wire in sq mm.

So -

NE goes to E
GI goes to L
MA goes to '+'
RO goes to '12V'

And the meter should go left to right as the engine warms ;D

Your Jaeger gauge has permanent magnets, to take out the rapid movements or variations in battery voltage. When you turn off the car after running, the gauge will stay reading the last temp. So when starting cold, the gauge will have a low temperature applied to it and slowly work its way to the correct indication. Then of course as the car warms up you will get a higher reading again. situation is normal.

I didn't know about the magnets - sorry.

I had a dig around in the shed and found a Jaeger temperature gauge. Sure enough the needle seems to point virtually anywhere depending on the orientation of the gauge (see photos), though when fired up it does read low temperature first (high resistance in the sender unit = cold) which swings to high temperature as the sender unit resistance falls. When disconnected it falls back to the left when the gauge is held upright.

I've a mate who owns a 1750GTV equipped with Jaeger instruments - I'll phone him on the weekend and ask him what his gauge does.

I've also attached a photo of the wiring at the back.

When you start your car, try disconnecting the sender and see what the gauge does. Otherwise if it's working, enjoy the ride :)

Chris,

Brilliant guidance.

Going to tackle the temp gauge this weekend, had some good success with my fuel sender last weekend, so one down one to go.

Appreciate all your advice and photos. I will keep you posted on the results.

Thanks,

Matt

All seems to be well behind the gauges, I am thinking the sender cable (thermocouple) must have disconnected at the engine. As the previous owner has installed another gauge complete with capillary line.
