Does anyone know if 156 wheels would fit a GTV V6

Hi All - I have just bought a 2001 GTV V6 (6spd). It has the standard 16 inch wheels common on 1998-2000 GTVs

see here for an example http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Alfa-Romeo-Spider-GTV-16-x-6-5-Alloy-Wheel_W0QQitemZ170089977039QQcategoryZ102319QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

- Most of the 2001-2003 V6 models had 17-inch telephone dial wheels - it seems my car's original owner didn't tick that options box. In the absence of being able to find a set of these, I was thinking about buying 16-inch telephone dials ex an Alfa 156.

Does anyone know if they would transfer across direct? I have had one opinion to say no (but maybe he just wants to sell me something more expensive).

Thanks
Torben

Torben,
if it is a "current" series spider (which a 2001 is), then any 156,147 based wheel option will bolt straight on.

Indeed wheels of current alfas will fit 75's n 90's.

Thanks for the heads up Ed -

...however I enquired at Lance Dixon - apparently 16 inch telephone dials DON'T fit a GTV V6 as they don't have the right offset to fit around the brake calipers. This is interesting because the 16-inch wheels on it now obviously do fit.

The seller on ebay with 16 inch telephone dials for sale assures me (in broken english) that he is a mechanic and he knows they fit.

So - where am I? The score is 2-2. Anybody want to be the tie-breaker?

Thanks

Torben,

Totally different from what you asked initially, but if budget allows, go the whole hog and go 17's!  ;D

Did I speak to you at Spettacolo last year and you were considereing buying an Alfetta GTV6 at the time?

Cheers

i'm curious as to the sellers identity and have my suspicions.  one way to check is take the car the where the wheels are (once you source them)and fit one, spint it and see if it rubs on the caliper.  If they are close you could still fit a spacer ring (buy at most auto parts stores).

Alternatively, ring Damon @ lance dixon and one of our sponsors like Monza or Italian Job etc.

Thanks for the advice guys -

Victor - yes I was looking for a '85-'87 GTV6 but the only decent ones (or decently priced ones) seemed to be for sale in Sydney, and even then there was going to be a lot of work involved (although I note one for sale on Drive.com.au for $23,000 - not much wrong with that I'd guess!).

After driving a few GTV V6s along the way, I was ok with front wheel drive, but the problem is that lack of back seat space for baby seats. However a booster seat fits in ok, so I'll be able to stack a couple of littlies in there from ages 2-8, and just have to work around that compromise. The other thing was the price - $30k for a decent 2001-03 6 spd. I managed to pay a lot less for mine so am happy (very), although it has 152kms (but full service history, basically 1 owner and highway kms - the car is very tight). Plus it is reliable with no rust - so happy to leave the 80s behind.

I do want 17" but can't see much likelihood of them coming up 2nd hand. They are available new but around $3800 incl tyres. That is a fair chunk of my purchase price! Certainly not a rational buy, especially since they probably make the ride a bit harder and I don't really need the better roadholding.

Ed - The seller was in NSW, so probably too hard to do anything like this. Re Lance Dixon's - Damon was the one who said they wouldn't fit - I just didn't want to give him any unwanted publicity without his permission!

Otherwise - anybody with any suggestions on how to get some 2nd-hand 17" for a reasonable price (say under $2k incl tyres), I'm ready to buy!

Cheers

Evan Bottcher

Last time I was out at Milano Spares he had quite a number of wheels - the standard ones and the 'teledial'.  If you asked very nicely perhaps Marc would let you test a wheel on your car before you buy this set from Sydney?  He might also do a good deal on wheels.

Alternatively if you want you can pop around here and I can take one of the 16" teledials off our 156 and you can try it out for size?  We're in Brunswick.

Thanks Evan - I have rung Milano - I think they had some 16" a few weeks ago but they were sold.

I might take you up on your offer of a try of some 16s - that would be a good way of resolving the issue.

Thanks

Just confirming - thanks to Evan - 156 16 inch telephone dials WILL NOT fit a GTV V6 - The GTV V6 standard wheels do have about 1.5 inches worth of extra offset built into them compared to the 156 wheels.

A spacer has been suggested, but intuitively this looks like it wouldn't work as the offset is too great.

Thanks again to the contributors and especially Evan who gave 45 mins of his time and 2 jacks to the cause to work this one out!

So I'm back to asking if anyone has any 17" telephone dial wheels from a GTV V6 to sell - let me know.

Thanks

Try Mille Miglia Motors. On his eBay shop he has 17" GTV wheels for sale, item number is 280003357274.

Just to add to the mystery around this, today I spoke to a guy who has a 2003 156 with 17" teledial wheels off the GTV. It looked great by the way. I'll post a couple of photos if anyone is interested.

Thanks Anthony - these are 17" but not telephone dial - am I correct?

I can probably only see the value in forking out a couple of grand if they are the original (if optional) wheels.

I am not overly excited about the looks of the newer wheels - maybe if I had a bodykit (and was a bodykit kinda guy)

But thanks for being some extra eyes and ears in my search!

They were 17" teledials, fitted with 215x45 tyres as per usual for 156's with 17" wheels, except GTA. Here's some photos.

Sure - I understand that the photos you posted are 17" teledials. My question in the last post relates to your comment about some for sale at Mille Miglia Motors - the ebay item number doesn't show up as telephone dial wheels - they are a newer cloverleaf type of pattern. But let me know if I am wrong and there are some for sale.

Thanks

Hi Torben,

I've been reading your thread with interest as I too would like some 2nd hand 17" teledials for my GTV V6...however they're very rare on the 2nd hand market.

Mille Miglia in Reservoir mainly have 16" teledials and other wheels. The guy there gets them from owners that have upgraded to 17" wheels. Personally, even if the 16" teledials did fit, I wouldn't bother as they would look too small also. Unfortunately, there's not much choice in non-Alfa wheels either given the GTV's unique PCD/offset...trust me, I've searched all over the net.

The ROH Modena is a nice wheel that can be made to order  www.roh.com.au

Anyway, keep us posted on how you go especially if you happen to find any 17" teledials.
