Hi Guys

Questions about the structure of the fuel system on the GTV6.

Last week driving home I had a fuel smell in the car. On the weekend still there but I was too busy with other things to remember to check it out.

Monday driving to work, fuel light was on so pulled in to fill up.

When i unlocked the fuel cap it just about took my arm off !!!!!! There was HEAPS of pressure.

Put about $30 of fuel in, back in the car - no fuel smell, and now after driving it around abit the smell is gone.

I can only assume there was so much pressure in the system that it was either leaking from somewhere in the front of the car (the smell was definately coming from the front) or there is a vent somewhere in the front for when the pressure builds up like a bad case of Bombay Belly :-)

It also begs the questions - why does the pressure build up so much. I have noticed this before but this is the first time I could absolutely say the pressure was causing a fuel smell from the front.

Any ideas or explanations Guru's.

hi there i get the fuel smell in the 90 to it happens on hot days and when im low if fuel, the pressure build up i think is to do with the return from the engine to the tank/if you have on the black container in the back, the pressure can be a little fun if you pull up next to a old lady and take the cap off quickly it gives them quite a fright. most the smell and pressure is due to low fuel

Does the vaccuum/suction mean that the venting is blocked? Can that lead to fuel starvation and a lean condition in the engine? I have found that when I fill up I get a fuel smell but found at the last fill that is due to the filler joiner leaking (bad seal rather than a split in the rubber thankfully). I do get the rather large amount of vaccuum on an empty tank however...

What do people do with their old 2.5...?

Perhaps the vapour release valve in the return line from the oil seperator is blocked.

Inlet pipe on the evap canister is blocked.  They rust and clog the small hole in the pipe.  Look under the rear parcel shelf on the LH side.

Hi J&H

I am assuming left when looking towards the front of the car - I will check it out this weekend (if I can drag myself away for my nearly finsihed Ducati :-)  )

Thanks for your responses guys - as usual some great info there.
