Hi guys,

This is a great little article on the Alfa T33 race cars , It clearly shows the origins of the Boxer engine especially the design of the 16V QV engine
Enjoy .

Nice little read but...........the Alfa Sud "boxer" pre-dates the T33 12C engines. The Alfa boxer probably owes a lot more to their designer Rudolf Hruska who also had a hand in the original VW beetle design, as well as Tiger tanks!  The T33 12C flat engines are actually a 180 degree, V12 if you like. Cylinder  sequencing  being the same as a V12. The actual "boxer" type configuration in which opposing bank pistons stroke toward then away from each other simultaneously, creates massive windage problems in the crankcase that saps large amounts of power and therefore is not used in purpose designed racing engines.

Hi there Vin,
Yes you are quite right but... this article was quite interesting in that the engine design of the Boxer 16V has very similar design elements to the N/A T33 race engine , regardless of the v-configuration of the Calo Chiti engine design. It is a "carry over" of race bred technology that found its way into the 16V. Not to mention its 78 BHP/Litre in standard configuration.

Thanks for the insight into the t33 race engine , there is nothing sweeter than the sound of an "Italian" Boxer engine .

Here is great little link if any one is interested in the variations of the Alfa flat four engines.

Great work Guys!

Really appreciate your comments Vin as after a full Beninca engine rebuild a couple of years back (1.7 Twin Carb) can now understand the power limitations in the Boxer motor (although am happy with 102 Hp ATW's and weighing 940 Kgs). Researched cams/ pistons/ head work and determined to rebuild basically stock. Martin rightly points out though that the Boxer is a fantastic motor and is my favourite motor (yeah, do prefer over the 105 motor).

Cheers
Paul
